Hello, all!
I was walking a gorge the other day and a fellow shutterbug was taking some photos. He had a laptop with him and as he was shooting, was checking the shots on his computer!
Does anyone else do this?
thanks!

Gee... Not like that. That's kinda nerdy. LOL
I use a laptop for downloading pics from the CF card to the laptop.
(Last time I did this, I was in a stinky horse barn because that's where the power outlet is. Laptop ran out of battery )
Don't have one of those portable hard drive card readers...

I do all the time. But it is more for resizing and uploading smaller versions for quick proofing. I"ll do some pp work, but not all that often on site.
I use a dell 710m and a cingular data card. Not the fastest, but it works where ever I have digital cell service.

Not for live review, but my Libretto fits into a Domke pocket for off-loading and pre-sorting.

I do when shooting Real Estate. I usually have the Realtor with me, I can then post-process on the spot, burn him his CD, and collect payment all in one session.

in my personal experience, if it's a single-location shoot i'll probably take the laptop, especially if there is a client involved. For sports, wildlife and general walking-around shooting it becomes a hassle to carry around, and I'd rather take an extra lens or something else...check this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=207427) for some info on the hyperdrive and other portable CF card downloaders

Not on outdoor shots . but sometime if I have the time on indoor work. Then it's only at the stage I change cards or maybe at the end of the session.

Nope...use the Epson P4000 and download at the end of the day onto the laptop.

Yes, if I had a laptop, I'd DEFINATELY use it in the field.
Here's why:
-Because without actually seeing your pictures in full size, you can't get a good feel for if their a good image or not, the LCD screens on DSLRs simply don't show you as much at all. It's like a whole new image when you go and see it on your computer.
-sometimes I do wish I had a laptop to use in the feild, cause then i could check my pictures much more easily.

I used to think that...but sometimes when you are hiking all day, the idea of hauling a laptop with you may be the decision maker as to leave a lens or something else of importance (not every one is 20-30, titan-like and strong ;) ). And sometimes hauling too much ends the day a lot faster than I want. So sometimes I return and think I have a shot when I don't, but at least I've spent the day as I planned and not been forced back by the weight of things. Hence the epson.

Yeah those are also good points Peregrin, I know weight can also be a big issue with laptops. I tend to forget about weight when it comes to buying nearly anything, I listen to performance/gains first (computer cases, laptops, camera gear, you name it). But that's just me.

:D :D You probably fit into that "0-30, titan-like and strong" category....:D You had good points, I wasn't knocking them...just saying why I don't carry mine.

Only time I bring my laptop with me is when I'm doing product shots on a large scale, its easier to shoot strait to the hard drive, then to CF cards and have to keep swapping them out. I might bring it to some location shoots to soft proof a complicated lighting shot or a special shot

I might take it with me but I wouldn't carry it on a trail! Too much dust & dirt

but i've just ordered a multimedia viewer with 20gig drive...so can't wait for that! looks like an epson too!

Whenever possible like tech shoots, product shoots and even portraits. Show the client your results, burn a DVD and GET PAID! all in one session. This saves time, prevents mistakes and is professional.
