I have a few thousand... this just happens to be one that I have less than 100 kb. I'll work on providing one or two more if it pleases the court.

Incidently I did sell my lens here and purchased the EFS 17-55. For the record, my Sigma 18-50 performed wonderfully. Fast and accurate (if noisy) focus. Excellent contrast, coloring and resolution. The only reason I replaced it was for the IS. It's a spectacular piece of the glass on it's own, but when you figure in price..

finally got my copy.
a little front focusing...i think. but maybe its just my pre-schemata i have from all these reviews I keep on reading.

anywho, heres a sample pic. i think it is farily sharp...100% crop is not touched at all by photochop.

Here's a quick wide open one ( f/2.8 )

Like i've said elsewhere, if you get a copy with decent focusing or if you learn to work around it (like muggins here has to) it's a very sharp lens.

I need to take it out more often.

Thanks Stu and slicendice for the awesome photos! I'm looking for a replacement for my now dead Sigma 24-70 f2.8 (focusing motor shot) and you have inspired me to get the 18-50EX f2.8. I was looking at it anyways but couldn't decide. If I buy that lense, can I take pictures as good as yours? ;) Tattietee, that is an excellent test photo to show how sharp the lense is. Thanks!

I don't mean to imply the other posted photos aren't good, but those mentioned above really helped make my mind up.

Cheers!

I have been using my Sigma 18-50mm F/2.8 for a while now. It was the first lens I got as a replacement to the kit lens. Here are a few shots I've taken since I have owned the lens (sorry, no 100% crops though). It has always been a good perfomer for me!

Gator lake was awesome and now I have a tele! 18-50 was all I had at the time but the cropping is obviously worth it. Only reason i posted the last to show sharpness on crop. This lens is so amazing. Was going to sell it to get the 24-105L but until I test that out personally, this is staying in the bag.

Quick question: Does the 18-50 (macro) have the same noisy AF as the 24-70?

_aravena

My only problem with AF is it's not fast. But you can't have HSM on everything, or can you?? Be nice...

I think AF noise wise, it's about the same. I never had the 24-70 but I have tried my friends and on the store.
Never had problem with the AF noise as long as it focus correctly. They make silencer for gun, can they make silencer for camera shutter as well?

They should put HSM on everything now! and still make it cheaper.
even the canon kit lens have USM.

Except that is not real USM, it is USM micromotor. Real USM is fast and silent. The 28-80mm MK1 like I have is real USM, to be honest the main thing you notice is noise, speed is not really much faster.

they do in Japan. Maybe that's why the model name is different.

over here they do

There are two versions of the 18-55. The kit lens does not come with USM, but the other one does. Check out the Canon web site for info on it.

Correct, I have had both. The ultrasonic kit lens has red lettering in the front of the lens, and the gold ultrasonic lettering on the silver ring. It focuses just a tad quicker, it appeared.

Thought I'd revive this with my final photos from this lens even though I've been posting int he Macro version thread. More to come but I will this lens. It was amazing and sharp but I upgraded and tested my new lens before I sold the other. I now have the 17-50 HSM OS and wow!

What, this only has a 5 pages long thread?! Is it unpopular? I use it mostly at events, I think it's a nice lens :D
Old random pics, I'll try to find and upload a few newer and better ones to show the lens from its best but I'm not sure which ones in my albums I've taken with this / the Nify Fifty
