I was shooting a gmae yesterday and suddenly noticed my 70-200 canon zoom would not autofocus. I checked all the buttons and switches and noticed the autofocus mode part of the top display on the camera (10D) did not say anything. It had been set to AI Servo. I unmounted the lens and put it back on and it started to work and the display showed AI Servo again. However, 10 minutes or so later, it quit focusing again and the display was blank again. The unmounting trick did not work this time.

Other lenses work OK on that body and this lens does not work on other bodies.

Anyone know what the problem is and have something to fix it or is it Canon service center bound :(

Crap. Sounds like the AF in the lens has gone south. My 100-400L did that too. Took three trips (Canon paid for #2 and #3) for CFS-Irvine to get it right and I was out my lens for a month. They get real busy this time of year too.

You have checked the switches on the lens right? Hate to play Master of the Obvious but sometimes we miss the obvious when things get wacky.

My new 70-200 f/2.8L has been terrible right out of the box, so I called Canon to see if it was possibly human error on my part or really the lens. After satisfying them (and myself) that it wasn’t, they gave me the option of sending it to them for repair (which I respectfully declined), or returning it to the dealer that sold it to me (17th St.). I’m actually having another one shipped to me while the first one is still sitting by the front door waiting to be sent back. As long as the credit card can stand it, so can I, I guess.

When I told the Canon rep that I wasn’t thrilled at the prospects of tying up my lens for an indeterminate period of time, he said things were being processed very quickly right now…..there wasn’t much of a delay. He said the big rush for repairs is over with everyone rushing to get their gear in shape for the holidays.

Sounds fishy to me, but I figure I’d pass it along.
