Critique my beach pics

I'm needing to learn to use my camera for more things other than motorsports, so I'd love comment and critique on two of my beach pictures.

Nephew Alex, and his grandmother (she's deathly afraid of the water):

First shot doesn't do anything for me.

Second shot on the other hand is very nice. Good timing and a great smile.

I like both shots. The first is fun b/c he is leaping out of the water! The second is great timing...he looks so happy. A side note, that is one fit grandma! Look at those legs :)

Thanks for the comments. My mom is a spry 73.5 with a replacement hip.

I think that first picture does more for me personally because I am personally connected.

I am the opposite.

The first shot has a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon capture to it. The fright jump, water licking at the heels.

Look at the picture from what is in the picture not from what the picture's technical qualities are and you'll see a keepsake.
