Wooohoo!!

It's Friday evening today on the Other End of the World thanks to the time difference (and HERE COMES THE WEEKEND!!! http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/dance.gif), and I took my 350D with 60 macro to go after a shot I had in my mind for a while.

I work in communications, network engineering specifically. This box supplies your Internet. Be nice to it.

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=80&g2_serialNumber=1

First shot was taken at ISO 400, 1/15, f/2.8 with available light (not much I can tell you that!)

Second shot was lit differently using one of the ultra high powered flashlights I use for work. Light was placed off to the side (you can guess the angle from the shadow) for more dramatic lighting and stronger shadows. ISO 400 1/100 f/2.8.

Tell me which one you like better... :)

It's also interesting to note that the wire is actually a light gray color (second photo) but appears white in the first thanks to the overhead flourescents. I did a double take since I have both white and gray lines in the area and I KNOW I didn't pull that line for the photo (not THAT great an idea!!)

Cool ... now we get to see the hot guys you are always talking about :p Man, you people don't have much work to do tho'. Look how tidy those desks are

Lighty, those are some nice shots of ... erm ... computer stuff

I'm on holiday so literally the only work I have done all week is starting to tidy loads of paperwork and starting to clean up my kitchen. Note the starting ... not bothered finishing either task yet   So, I guess I have to find some poor saps pretending to work hard

Condyk, Johan's very tidy on his desk always. Adam just cleaned his when packing up the new computer. If a messy desk is a sign of being busy you'll love mine; tons of Post-it's everywhere!

If you want I'll see if I can get pics of everyone in the office. :p The CEO said he walks naked when everyone has left, maybe I can catch him & post on the G&N... ;)

LOL... great shots Claire love them both.. and Dave.. even though I don't work from a desk mine is plenty untidy lots of opened mail, scatters of papers, c.d.s and even some random pieces of jewelry, pens and pencils an empty journal and some c.d.s thrown on it...

Ahhh... Cisco... At only 10Mb on that port I'm glad it doesn't supply mine ;)

I prefer number one, for me it's warmer and not so 'clinical'

A shrink I knew once said "An empty desk is the sign of an empty mind." Wooooww.. hear the professionals call it like it is! :D Cheers to us messy-desk folks, mine is SO crowded the 5D hardly even has space to sit!

Dave, thanks.. we have a very technical name for it, we call it "the box with blinky lights" http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/crackup.gif

Kevin, yup.. well, I'm not greedy. I would be content with a 10Mbps WAN... I just want it all to myself  yeah, #1 has the nice warm feel because the flouros aren't 100% white, they have a slight tint. Fear the handshake blur though.

You know the little letterbox windows they put in construction site hoardings so you can see what's happening? Well I looked in and not much was happening! Check out the "look" I'm getting :-D

Sorry for exceeding my limit, but I had to put this one in. I was trying to get a photo through a fence from a park nextdoor to the building site, and looked down and there was this little guy lookin' through too. He's a Curlew.

You should consider using http://www.post-it.com and you can put post-it's all over your windows desktop.

My desk at work is really tidy but thats because we get customer visits from time to time and it doesn't look good if the desks are a mess. At home my desk is a mess. But my post-it's are on the windows desktop.

Tommy, the Marketing Director use those electronic post-it's. I don't think they'd work for me. I'd just mentally not register them. Too many other things open on the screens.

My office desk is big & much less messy than at home. God I have to clean my desk soon...

I will probably not have time to go out find somebody working I can photograph. Since I am not going to post a selfportrait but will be working most of this weekend I took this shot.

Except for when I later today go for my second driving lesson I will be spending most of my time this weekend (and the next and next and next .... until mid november at least) in front of this laptop working.

Meaty0 - Nice shot of the helmet. I love the Curlew shot but he/she looks kinda sad, almost like it cant get through the fence.

Tommy - Reminds me too much of work, I seem to spend far too much time in front of my (HP/Compaq) laptop...

I hope to get out again this weekend, although it's currently pouring down with rain (again!!)

Its a D810 and it is nice but it is a little too big and heavy. When it is time to replace it I think I will get a smaller even though the resolution of 1920x1200 is really nice for the kind of work I do.

Tommy, those post-its look good. I used to use them when I was a Mac guy. My proper ones fall off wherever I post 'em and get lost, so a waste of time.

Lightstream: So that's what that is.:!: I prefer #2 for it's cleaner composition.

Claire: Adam's expression is great. Made me smile.

Meaty0: I chuckled when I read your comment on #1. Your comp on #1 looks good to me -- I like the colors & especially like that all lines lead to poor Max's hat. Nice one.

Tommy: Good job with the screen. I never tried shooting my screen because I just assumed it's too tricky for me. Sorry to hear about you working for so many weekends. I sure hope you're getting some time off during the week. About the electronic stickies: I didn't even know they existed. I retired six years ago, so I'm really out of touch with stuff like that. But I used to use real stickies on the frame of my monitor. Problem was, if I didn't act on a sticky within the first day or so, I got used to seeing it and ignored it.

Hurricane Ernesto (?) brought some much needed rain yesterday and today. Don't know if I'll get some shots or not. If not, I'll enjoy the ones others post.:)

At Work!

The first one is pretty self explanatory - a builder doing road works. (well...not many people do such public jobs that I can photograph them.)

106800

I tried to get a bus driver, but they where either in the dark (and ended up blurred) or they were shielded by reflections.

The second one needs some explaining. The local council decided to implement a bus tracking system. Buses are fitted with GPS devices of some sort, and then the boards show how long each bus will be...

great! Except the area I live in veto'd a request to have bus lanes seperate from car lanes (I don't support that...but thats a different story), so we get very unfavourable treatment by the bus companies. This system has been in the north of Edinburgh for the last 2 or so years, and its only recently be implemented near me...

so what has it got to do with work...

"Finally...they work!"

106801

First one with nify, second one with 70-300.

What a wasted day. First off it is raining. Then I decide to set off in the car anyway to visit the Custard Factory part of Birmingham (where Birds invented Custard!) which is now a 'trendy work/live arty/shopping quarter' but the traffic was terrible. Now I remember why I don't use my car from one month to the next.

So, given the market I wanted to visit there would be drawing to a close anyway, especially with the weather, I though I'll head home and see what the various builders on various projects are up to. Nothing. All gone home on account of the weather.

Anyway, I took half a dozen shots around about and this is the best of a sad, drizzly bunch. It is kinda when work isn't happening what else happens? Not much it seems other than some bright spark tipping a load of work stuff where you shouldn't be tipping it.

I went up to a fair that was going on this weekend. I got there really early (as soon as the gate opened at 8am) thinking I could get some shots of the carnies setting up. Well, I guess most of the carnies sleep in these days! So I got these instead...

This guy was the official photographer at the horse ring and was taking pictures of the winners.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m114/BeccaNH/POTN%20Challenges/IMG_8604_edited-1.jpg

And this guy seemed in a really good mood considering he was going to spend the day in a food vending trailer!

And I'm going to cheat a bit too (sorry!) and post one that I took yesterday when I was working from home because I hadn't figured out where I was going to get work shots yet. My hands typing.

Becca I love the colours in your shots Becca. But I ESPECIALLY like the second shot of the vendor...specifically...CHECK OUT THE SIZE OF HIS PICKLES. I wish we had dill pickles that big and juicy here. Ours are miserable little green affairs with a vaguely dill flavour...it's really sad I tell you. :-(

Jeez Paul, keep it clean! :D

Hmm, not sure that I'll get any photos this weekend ... I spent 4 hours mowing the lawn yesterday (ughh, probably should have gone for a self portrait), and today is pretty packed with stuff ... not sure I'll have time. I'll have to see how I go.

Claire: Hehe, fun shots ... love them.
Paul: Love your peephole shot. I can imagine what that bloke was thinking :). The curlew is great, too. He/she does look sad.
lakiluno: Gotta love any photo of an excavator (I work in the mining industry). When I look at that photo, I keep wanting to reach out and put a hardhat on that guy's head! This is my new tonka toy for interest: http://www.psychogoat.com/linked/20060823_1966_w1024_1.jpg

Lakiluno: Nice interpretation on #2. But I don't understand the Tracker's message. Looks to me like bus #11 is due at the same place at different times. Same with bus #16. What am I missing?

BeckyNH: The official photographer seems to be traveling more lightly than lots of amateurs I've seen. Love the expression on the vendor's face. Nice colors too.

the bus numbers (eg 11, 16) refer to their routes. Bus number 11 will go through certain roads, bus 16 through others, and they will end up at different places.

Both the 11 and 16 are quite frequent (more people use them) so they will appear twice on the screen. For instance, there's a 16 due in 2, 14 and 24 minutes, so they run every ten minutes or so.

Hehe, no, I'm the operations manager where it'll be working. I would love to have a go in it though :)

Just in case anyone's interested, it weighs 250 tonnes, has a 1850HP diesel engine in it, and that bucket can pick up about 35 tonnes of rock at a time.

It's not actually a particularly big one relative to others in the mining industry, but it's brand spanking new, which is why I took a photo of it :D

I took a few shots yesterday at work, but when I got home I just didn't like what I had and deleted them. Today, I wandered around the complex at work for a while. I ended up coming home with a few more than I could use, and it was a pretty tough decision to narrow it down to just two... Here they are (I work at a large medical center/hospital, by the way):

One of the laundry workers driving his cart around the basement, schlepping linens and gowns to the various elevators where he then delivers them to the nurses stations on the floors above. I've seen these cart "trains" get about a dozen cars long, and this is their most difficult corner. They usually have to stop to unhitch a few and move them by hand, then hitch them back up again when they've made it around the corner.
http://www.ldphotography.net/wwpd/work1.jpg

A few backboards and a gurney at the ambulance entrance to E.R., waiting for the next emergency, showing sometimes it isn't always all work around here...
http://www.ldphotography.net/wwpd/work2.jpg

While wandering around I also got a few more shots that I was very happy with, including one or two from the top level of one of the two employee parking structures, showing most of the medical center. As I walked over to my vantage point, I saw the security van parked in the far corner. I thought it was odd for it to be there at 6am on a Sunday morning, but didn't really pay much mind to it until after I had fired off a half dozen or so shots. Then I looked over and noticed the security guard slumped over in the driver's seat, sound asleep. I tiptoed away, but boy do I now wish I had aimed his way for a few good candid shots... I always feel brave after the fact, but I was too concerned at the time about what he would do if he suddenly woke up and saw me pointing a camera with a big ol' lens at him, catching him in the act...

Meaty0: I love your curlew shot! He sure looks like he's concentrating on something...

Meaty0: love the light you're getting in the hard hat pic.

Condyk: that's a great b&w shot. Probably doesn't have anything like the impact in colour, I would guess.

BeccaNH: you food vendor shot's great. The expression on the chap really tells a story. Did you talk to him about the shot before or after?

lakiluno: I recognised the roadworks before I clocked your username! And, since you were talking about the #16 bus...
http://giles-guthrie.com/i/misc/potn/wwpd-26-2.jpg

PP amounts to cropping and levels in both pics.

I would say you were brave shooting the workies with Nifty, since these guys were less than impressed with me, and I was shooting at 300mm!! Unusual to see workies at it on a Sunday away from core routes. Perhaps the council has budget for triple time these days. Nice to see where my taxes are going...

Busy weekend, but; all fun, I haven't even looked at everyone else's posts, thought I would submit then go back and look and comment:

Spent yesterday boating with my brother and his family on the mighty Mississippi, found a couple of shots to foot the bill for this weekend:

#1, this barge was working hard getting through the lock. It was so long they had to break up the sections to get through:

http://performancephoto.us/images/Beckysgallery/CRW_6135.jpg

Another barge with workers painting, note the one on the right, I swear his waist band was below his buttocks. Both pictures show commerce does not stop for weekends or holidays.

Lightstream I like the light difference in #2.

Claire I want to work there, looks like it is very casual, I live for casual Fridays.:) My desk is usually very clean and organized, but; at home, forget about it.

Meaty0 If looks could kill, eh? Nice capture and I love the little Curlew.

Tommy Your workspace looks like mine, lots of windows open at one time. I driver our IT department nuts when they come to install something new, they have wait forever for me to close everything out.

Leo I like #1 a lot, #2 I don't understand the schedules, so; will take your word for it that it is working the way it is suppose to.

Condyk Interesting take on the theme, I'm sorry the weather didn't cooperate better for you, but; glad to see it didn't stop you.

BeccaNH Don't think I would want to use a flash in a horse show, too afraid I'd spook the animal. #2 is a great capture of the feel of the fair. #3 you certainly have quick fingers.

Lonnie You brought back some memories of my earlier working days in a hospital, very nice perspectives and colors.

Giles In both shots, I like how what the bright colors add to what appears to be a dreary day.

Barbara Nice shots both of them. I like the career choices you chose to shoot.

Crissa I really like #1's booth and both capture a nice summer day, especially knowing the weather that had just come through. And yes, I would like to see your idea for #3:lol:

Claire: Neither my desk at home of at work is that neat. Now that my wife is working from home I have to make an effort to keep it neater.

MeatyO: Great Peep hole shot, really like the B & W

Lakiluno: Those Trackers are great. Really appreciated them on my visit to Edinburgh last year, you knew how long you had to wait.

Condyk: Great shot, goes to show that people don't pay attention to signs.

BeccH: The vendor looks like is he enjoying life to the max. I wish I could type that fast, I'm still using the Columbus system.

Mat: That would be great to have during rush hour. Wouldnt move very fast but it would clear everyone out of the way.

Thomascanty: Reminds me of our Hospitals, but our guys have to haul them around by hand.

BLS: That guy must have confidence in the barber, he looks like he is asleep.

BeckyN: Well at least a few of us had some sunshine. Give us an idea of life on the Mississippi

skrim17: Really like those Farmers markets, you can always find some interesting shots.

We've had rain most of the weekend but managed to get a couple of shots at one of our local markets.

This one combines two things I enjoy, Chocolate and pretty women (Montreal Has lots of both). This is a little kiosk in the middle of the market selling hand made chocolates and is always very busy.

it was father's day on sunday and my daughter and i worked in the yard cutting down flowers and palms. but i've posted her too much lately.

i also worked on the weekend shooting rugby league grand finals at Brookvale Stadium.
here is the ref working the game, scolding someone for a high tackle

my darling wife also worked on the weekend making cakes (which she sells). she wouldn't let me take her photo as she's very pregnant and 'too messy'. oh well...

so i took a photo from my new office - yes it's a Canon sign outside my window :)

PS since a few others cheated, here (http://homepage.mac.com/imagetechphoto/tempy/_T2A5401.jpg) is one of the 6 cakes and several dozen cupcakes my wife made...

Here's my contri to this week's wwpd. I apologize but it has to be three pictures to do justice to my intepretation. only this time. I took three pictures of my work desk; left view, front view, and right view.

Hi Becky, thanks for the comments.
We buy this equipment but I had a large part in the electrical design of how it fits into our Electricity System. The wall bit is to just update some of the pics we have in our Engineering Office. I purposely tried to emphasize the words Circuit Breaker with DoF + I like the combination of the red & blue.

I was going to post mine, but I am sure you guys really dont want to see dental implants being put in. I wanted to get out and take pictures this weekend, but I ended up working and thats what I was doing mostly and I also took pictures of one case for a freind who is doing a double blind study and wanted a documented case....

If enough people want to see them I will post a couple, they are not bloody or anything, but most people dont want to see that sort of stuff...

I should perhaps clarify myself, what is this COMING weekend's theme? It's Wednesday already. By now we're usually starting to discuss the next theme.

okay y'all many, many apologies for the lateness of these shots these were taken on friday right after setting up the private club for a wedding rehearsal.. simply grabbed the camera and snapped for ten minutes.. construction is still going on and there's a big old hole right by the club, I haven't asked what the heck it's for but I figure i'll find out eventually and the second one is a couple of the chairs in the club..

What just popped into my head was WARNING ... or CONTEMPORARY. I dunno why  but as usual I don't really care too much

Paul's "birds" suggestion from earlier in the thread gets my vote.

That'd give me an excuse to avoid the housework I know I need to do this weekend and get out and chase some birds, rather than doing it and feeling guilty :)

Great shots everyone. Way too many to comment on individually this weekend. I grabbed some shots on Friday before heading to the beach for a quick little family getaway and managed to grab a few more during the weekend, but have had not a single moment to spare for PP. Not even just conversion to jpeg and resize. In fact, I don't see any spare time in the next several days either unless I can get them done on my lunch break today. I am also going to stay out of the suggestions for next week as I don't see any time this weekend for shooting. I have lots of things to do and unless the topic covers one of those things I most likely won't even break out the camera.

Take it easy. Life's too short to work yourself to death.

I'm mid-20s and already know how much burnout can cost (my career for starters.. nearly put an end to that before it had even gotten off the ground)

well...I'm off to an airshow on saturday, so something I can work that into would be great.
