I just got my new memory in.
1 GB Toshiba Professional speed, it appears to be the only speed possible at this time in 1GB.
Offcourse I wanted to know what the difference was between my Xtra High speed and this proffesional speed version (5.6MB per second max card).
I shot 9 frames in raw and started counting after the last shot.
On the Xtra High-speed the burst took a little under 40 seconds.
On the professional speed a little under 30 seconds..:D
That's a 25% speed increase app.
Now let's hope it's even quicker in the XsDrive, because getting a 512 empty allready took ages.
One thing that surprised me is that formatting of the card is also twice as fast in the camera ??? is that normal.
Greetings,
Frank
(now shooting 161 pictures on a card)
By the way the 10D, stops counting by 999 shots left :D.

Do you have any recommendations as to where is the cheapest place to get memory from (i.e. over the net or local shop)?
Prices for 256/512/1Gb cards would also be handy.
Cheers.

Cheapest places are probably dicey at best. You might try something like www.dealtime.com, or www.pricegrabber.com. I would reccommend against this, and go thru www.bhphotovideo.com or www.ritzcamera.com. Ritz will ship for free in the US if over $100, and I got the 10D thru them and free shipping. I'm not sure what charges are like international shipping. I know B&H ships international and think Ritz does as well.
Option 2, is getting another mass storage device like the Flashtrax drive, Xs Drive, and the like to dump the pics to when you get full CF cards. That is far cheaper! How much would 40GB of CF cost? Lots!

Thanks Canuck,
2 things ...
1, I will look into the International Shipping, but I am totally with you about not going so cheap that you end up buying from dodgy dealers -> end up 'paying' more in the long run, whether it be a faulty product or annoyances in transfers.
2. You mentioned getting a mass storage device ... do you know of any internet resources that discuss/have pictures of these so I can get a better understanding of what they actually are.
Are they simply external hard drives that you plug in? If so, how do you conntect to computer? If not, what exactly are they?
Cheers.

Funny you should ask...
I was in the market for such an item, as I have 2x 512MB CF cards and shooting RAW eats them fof lunch so to speak. There are several options. I went with the Smartdisk Flashtrax drive as it has a 3.5" screen as opposed to the lame 1.8 in screen on the 10D. It's about 4x the real estate. It should be here any year now, being that the Christmas rush is nearing.
I had a thread all about it...

There is also the EzDigiMagic that you put the CF card in and write to CDR or CDRW. www.ezdigimagic.com I think, and there is the Xs drive and the thread on it...
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11563
There is also the Nixvue Vista, Apacer CDR/W and others which you can find at the place I get my stuff from www.bhphotovideo.com
Hope this helps and I'm calling it a night, it is 0210 here.
I'll be back later today, after some sleep in the afternoon.

Another option is www.computers4sure.com. They stock alot of different brands of CF cards for good prices. They are very reliable.

A note on the above, I do recommend using pricegrabber if you know what you want, but the trick is to look at what the reputable dealers are offering as prices and if the others are way off, I avoid them, but if within 10% and not a serious chunk of money, I will try them out. If they pass then I will use them again for a larger amount, until as I now do with B+H I am willing to trust them with any amount I am willing to apend.
If nobody gives them alternative sources a chance, there will be no competition after awhile.
B+H is fantastic, but I occasionally go elsewhere for certain items if I can get it cheaper. I just avoid the "exceptional" deals since I would not trust those enough with any of my money.
Just me ranting on a pet peeve.

Longwatcher,
I was figuring this person is a complete newbie and wanted to get him set up reliably, and not worry about it. I have to sleep at night too after making reccomendations. The end of the day, I was going for the safe, reliable, and no worries answer. I too trust B&H for any amount I spent, they have come thru every time and wouldn't expect anything less. I completely understand what you are talking about with exceptional deals and one of them was www.expresscamera.com offering a Canon EOS 10D for $1189. No way would I shop there! Someone posted that here and it is the low-cost Rebel thread. I went and had a look at the site for giggles and I wasn't impressed. I don't think there is anything worse than newbies going for one of those exceptional deals and then getting taken to the cleaners and then posting on this forum about their experience. Enough said...
