Suggestions?

It's hard to make a specific suggestion without knowing what you wanted to do with this picture. As a record or your dolls it serves fine. It does not, however, make an artistic statement of some kind.

A "product" shot as a commercial photographer would not have the black line coming in from the left, and would arrange the lighting/background so you didn't see the shadows. At least those changes would be made.

There might be another reason you took the picture, and it would help us to make comments if we knew your goal.

Thanks Greg. I really appreciate the feedback.

And you're right, not only that I should have discussed my goal, but also that my goal is indeed 'product-oriented.' Meaning, I'm just starting to help a friend display her products online, and have a long ways to go, obviously.

I am experimenting with lighting with these products but find natural
light and long exposures give the overall look I want.

But I appreciate your opinion that the shadows are a problem, and I agree.

Thanks again.

For product display: The ribbon encroaching from the right is distracting. Might a pale yellow background add more interest and give the dolls more depth?

Some of the shadow problems might be overcome with just using strong white card to reflect.

For what you're doing there, I reckon you should experiment with different backgrounds and set-ups. With the subject on a plain white background you might be taking pictures of nuts and bolts. How about "arranging" the dolls on a grass mat and/or with some pieces of exotic fruit? The dolls have lovely colours and the harsh white background doesn't do much for them.

To qualify the above - I know very little about photography, I don't sell anything (Except I once sold my soul for a 10D), I don't do marketing or advertising and couldn't build a bonfire, let alone a web page!
