I would like to get some advice on how to setup the lighting for small animal photography - frogs, spiders, snakes, etc.
I was thinking I would use 2 lights from behind the subject (left rear and right rear) and then the standard buil-in flash that is on my Canon 350D for the front lighting.
I am not a professional and cannot afford a nice studio setup so I was wondering could this be done with incandesant lights or would Halogen spots work better? What would you suggest for

1. Do-it-yourself lighting setup and
2. Low budget amature setup?

The objective would be to take pictures like the one attached :)

Thanks in advance for any support and advice

Try this, place the animal on a small black box, and get some black material a couple of metres behind it, this way the background should be OFF and completely black. I would suggect acquiring a flash gun and bouncing the flash from the ceiliing (if it is not black, tape some foil onto it), also a couple of light left and right (gentle) won't hurt.

For small creatures, a ringflash may work, or a DIY diffuser for a flashgun
