ok so i which i never do because they are high priced but i was in Wolf camera and they had a Sigma 24-60 2.8 for 339 so i bought it but i am curious to know. iI you personally owned lets say the Canon 17-85 IS lens would you buy this lens or would you consider the Sigma 24-702.8 or the Sigma 150 Macro. now i already have the usually's 70-200 f4 and "Nifty". and i know the obvious about one step down and such but am i totally overlapping or should i possibly consider a wider range. What is your take on it? I woul love to know to ease my possible buyers remorse. thanks alot.

I have the Canon 17-85 IS lens and bought a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Even though it overlaps, the Tamron is faster and does better in low light.

Hmm, tricky - I think they say the IS buys you one extra f stop, so there's not a lot of difference between the two, but if you find yourself using one and not the other, just sell the extra.

When you get your 5D you won't be able to use the 17-85 :) So, I'd keep the 28-75 :)

The 24-60 is lighter than the 24-70, and uses smaller filter. It's rated pretty good, but since you already have the 17-85, I don't think you need this lens unless you really want it for f2.8, which is nice for bokeh. Only you can make that call.
Personally, I'd recommend the 24-70 EX

That is about what I paid for my Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro. Not sure about the 24-60 but the 24-70mm is a pretty good lens for the money.

According to Sigma, the 24-60 has similar optics as the 24-70. You trade the 10mm in reach for lighter weight. You do have an overlap in coverage. If it was me, I'd probably sell the 17-85 and get an ultrawide so you have 10-22 and 24-60, or if you are happy with 17-85, perhaps return the 24-60.

rt on yeah i have just been wrestling with this descsion and am probably going to return it i feel that i have to much overlap and if need be i can bump up the ISO. for some reason besides my meter i just get such underexposed pics (most likely user error hahaha). I guess honestly the only reason i got the lens was for low light nothing else. for the couple of wedding shots that i have done it was hard to get the right exposure and my pics needed extra love in PS. any other comments welcome and thanks for your time.

Look, you are clearly NOT happy with your purchase. You should have elation, not remorse!
Take it back, get a refund, and research your next lens properly in advance before you go shopping....easily said though - I have occasionally popped in to look and come out with a bag of something or other!
But seriously, that you even ask this question tells me you regret the purchase. Go make things right for yourself.

That's what I'd do. The consumer grade Canon IS lenses are pretty average to my eyes, unless conditions are spot on. The Sigma would probably give better results when used well.

many of us do most of our shooting in a narrower range than you would think. personally i think overlap is a good thing if it's concentrated in the range that you shoot.
i don't buy the argument that if you have a 24-80 mid-zoom that you should buy the 10-24 instead of the 16-39 solely because it gives you better coverage.
my opinion is buy lenses that you will use instead of being concerned about widening your range.
if you concern yourself with the latter you may be changing lenses more frequently or avoiding a certain lens for a shot or two, which would actually reduce your range.
