This is a young hog nose. Sorry about the background, he was in the bike path. I didn't want to mess with him to get him in the grass.

It's not that common to see these critters...you seem to have an ability to meet up with them (the Deer too).....It's nice to see newest pics of these snakes....

The patterns resemble the Rattler...don't be fooled...

You're right, I tend to be very lucky. I saw this guy at Chincoteaque (sp) Virginia. It was the first time I had ever seen one. The conservation officer said they are non poisonous. Pretty cool snake, when he was threatened, he actually flattened his head like a cobra.

Next time you see one-make sure you mess with him for some great pictures. Hog-Nosed snakes will first flatten and puff their necks, then, as a last resort, will roll over and play dead-even to the point of letting (forcing) thier tongue our of their mouth as if it was a cartoon! You can often pick them up as they continue their routine. Occasionally, though I have never seen it, they will emit a small amount of blood from thier eyes! One warning, however, I left out the section of self-defense where they 'give off' a deterrent musk that is very unpleasant--so you might want to avoid this step if you are going to a wedding or something:).

I like the background. I think the plane of focus ahighlights and absorbs the background nicely. The grey colors also highlight the coloration of the snake.
