I use an A40 and have printed several excellent 5x7 prints at walmart with the self serve Noritsu unit. Is 8x10 possible with images from this camera (2 megapixel)

Any print size is *possible* but if it looks good enough to you is something that only you can judge. There are no strict rules for this.
I guess your 2 MP images contain approximately 1633 x 1225 pixels. If you spread out 1633 pixels over 10 inches, you get about 163 pixels per inch. I think this will give you a print that doesn't look really bad, but again, you have to decide for yourself if it's good enough.

How big you can print will depend, among other things, on how the picture will be viewed. A picture at the back of a shop window display, where people can't get too close to the picture, can be much larger than one to be looked at in the hand.

Does anyone know where there is a guide to how large each inrement of mega pixels allows for printing?
eg 1 megapixel = 5x7
2 megapixel = 8x10
etc...
Just wondering how big some of you here have printed your images and what megapizel the image was you printed.

With an A40 2MP, you can print 5"X7" with no problem, meaning a discerning photographer would not complain *too* much looking at it close up. 8"X10" will probably be soft. Anything larger will probably be crappy close up.
At around $2.84 for a 8"X10" at Walmart, why don't you try it and tell us how it comes out, since I just bought an A60 2MP for a family member who usually doesn't print over a 4"X6" and I was wondering the same thing.
Thanks,

Right I printed a 8 x 10 from a 2MP image and I was pleasantly surprised! Of course up close you can tell the image has been stretched. At points on the image where 2 contrasting colours meet you can see artifacts, but as soon as you get about 2 feet from the image it looks great!
I now have 4 of my prints on a wall in my front room and everyone always comments on them :)

Thanks dustjunky for your review. I figured 8X10 would be soft without using some software programs to 'expand' your pictures. That's still impressive that a 2MP camera can produce reasonable 8X10's heh?

I can print 13x19 and 16x20 easily with my nikon D1 2.74 mp body. with a nikon D1x 5.47 mp body, i can do 16x20- 20x30 very easily... haven't tried anything higher yet, but still no artifacts or pixelation at those sizes.. so i'm sure i can go higher. i have a number of 13x19 prints in my room that i did with the nikon d1 body and it's only a 2.74 mp body, sensor size is what makes the difference.
