Been to many concerts before, but tonight was my first time to take photos of one.
The band's called "Start from Scratch" and they were pretty hot!

These were taken handheld with my Canon 30D and 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM lens, ISO 1600, no flash:

You've done a really nice job on these, good captures, nice and sharp. Pretty impressive with that glass.

definitely nice captures. the foreground hands-in-the-air is a bit distracting, but not much you can do about it. looking forward to yr next post.

can we request pics of certain japanese bands? ;) there are a bunch of psych/noise artists from japan who are amazing (ie, acid mothers temple, ghost, merzbow, keiji haino, high rise, up-tight, etc) and if you ever see bands that like i'd definitely be into seeing the pictures.

Well, I can guarantee anything (unless of course you commision me), but I may do some more band shoots. Glad you like them!

Thanks Andy! I thought the same about the hands, but other people seem to think that
they are a distraction. Who knows... Anyway, It's not my style photography as you know,
but was kind of fun nevertheless.

I was too far back and my lens was too short to get any real portraits without cropping,
but this one comes closer to what you were looking for I think:

i'm pretty amazed at the quality of shots you got at f4. i thought you needed a f2.8 lens to take concert pics?

i was debating on getting a 70-200mm IS USM L lens either the f4 or f2.8 version.

You need an f/2.8 for low light...if the concert is well lit you can get away with an f/4. The problem is if your a "concert shooter" you will find most are not well lit or you will want to capture shots when the lighting is down. I'd never go to a concert without out fast glass. That does not mean that I'm going to shoot wide open all the time.

I have to agree with Alex, I thought f4 would be too slow for concerts. Just learned something new today!

The IS helps a lot. Still, some of my shots were blurry from too much movement of the band members. I suppose a 2.8 would have been better, but I don't have one for my 30D, so I made do with f4.

I wonder if Canon's newly announced lens will do the trick? It's still not yet available...

70-200mm f4 IS USM L

The standard is the 70-200L f/2.8 IS USM - I don't know the price difference but it is worth it for the extra stops.

The f2.8 is about $1,100 and the f4 $600. One is lighter, one is brighter. Depends on your needs (and your budget).

the f/2.8 IS is much more than $1100, more like $1700 but in my opinion it is a must.

You're right. That was the used price I saw one for on eBay, sorry.
