I have a Canon A70 and I am looking for a freeware M-JPEG codec for the WIN XP WMP 8. Currently if I want to view a movie shot with the Canon A70, I have to open the Canon Zoom Browser and click on the avi file, which in turn automatically opens WMP 8 and plays the movie. I would like to load the codec directly into WMP 8 and bypass the Zoom Browser program in order the play the Canon avi movie. Thanks for your help.

I've found that any reasonably new version of Quicktime will play them.

The m-jpeg codec is a little hard to find, there are a number of shareware ones but I have a problem with paying for something system-level like this. Morgan's is $25. PicVideo has one for $28.

Ricoh has one which appears to be free (not sure, haven't tried it) at http://www.ricoh.co.jp/r_dc/dc/support/download/drivers/6000dec.html which may or may not be Ricoh specific, maybe worth giving it a try?

If you're looking for any codec, a good place to start is www.fourcc.org

Finally, I thought XP had it installed natively, from the updatexp site : "Windows XP includes a MJPEG decoder. If you are getting error messages about MJPEG then I suggest you try one of Google Groups for help. "

There's one in the files section over at the Yahoo S30 list. You may need to register to access it.
