View Full Version : Helpful Filters and/or Actions - What Where

In another thread someone was talking about having just discovered the "Midnight Sepia" action for Photoshop. I discovered this action about 3 years ago with the guidance of someone on this board. Since, at that time it seemed as though I was the only one who did not know about it, I have just figured that everyone had access and awareness. So it sort of surprised me when I heard of someone just now discovering it.

So that is where I got the idea for this thread.

If you know of a technique, action or filter that you find useful - do not assume it is common knowledge. Let's post some before and after shots here, so we can share what they are and what they do. Please also post the download site, or instructions.

I suppose free is better, because not everyone can afford $300 for NIK. BUT, if you know of a great one that is reasonably cheap, go ahead and post it, too.

I will start.

These three are from Action Central (LINK (http://www.atncentral.com/download.htm)). One is the Midnight Sepia action that brought the topic up. The second is the Dragan action, and finally the Urban Acid action (Which is pretty close to a E6/C41 cross process.) I used the default settings on all three.

The source photo is a shot from the Space Needle in Seattle, looking south.

My first suggestion (sorry for "borrowing" your photo) are the BW toning and split-toning actions from http://www.1clickactions.com (http://www.1clickactions.com)Coming from a "traditional" darkroom background it was nice to see the older ideas replicated. Not free but pretty good considering what's included - the portrait ones especially are pretty cool.

Although I bought the actions initially for the BW toning I find that I use them now for many pictures to the exclusion of some of the more expensive ones I've bought in the past.
