I hate to sound stupid, but has anyone used the 1.4x, and the 2x Extenders on a Canon 50mm f1.4 USM Lens?

I believe those extenders only work with "L" lenses.

I'm not that STUPID!! From what I have read on this Forum, they sure work on other NONE "L" LENS.

Well I'm pretty much still in the newb mode, but I thought the extenders only worked on 135mm or larger?

I didn't say you were. I was just relaying what I was told by someone at Samy's Camera in Santa Barbara. He told me the Canon extenders only work with their "white" lenses, but third party extenders, like Tamron, Phoenix, etc., may work with the other lenses.

Thanks for your input. I think I should have mentioned the Tamron, and the Sigma Brand of Extenders. From what I have read, they should work. I'm just experimenting. I do a lot of that.:D:D

There is a mechanical restriction for the Canon extenders: they have protruding elements and therefore work only with Canon's prime lenses longer than 135mm and some specific zooms.
Third-party TCs might work if they don't have protruding parts.

I was looking at the TAMRON SP AF 1.4 X PRO TELECONVERTER. It doesn't have a protruding element to hinder the use of it, but it will only work on lens that are 90mm and above. It goes for $189.00 US

Here is a link to the compatability chart for the Canon 1.4x Extender II. As mentioned above, it will not work with non- L lenses, or primes shorter then 135 mm.

Click on 'Compatibility Chart".

My Tamron 1.4X C-AF1 MC4 works just fine with my Canon 50 1.8 II, FWIW.

Thanks Scott. I've already looked at that page from B&H. I ordered the 50mm lens this morning from B&H. In fact, I have the page already on my Desktop as a shortcut. That is the extender that I am planning on buying when I get the 100-400L Lens. I was just curious if they would work on the 50mm Lens.

What do you mean by "will not work"? Optical disadvantages like vignetting, or electronical issues of AF or Aperture function?
Just curious!
Thanks,

I just used the 2x extender on my 100-400 IS L 2 weeks ago. It's tricky. The viewfinder is much darker and pictures less sharp. I got some winners but much less then without the 2x. The 1.4 being 1 stop less greedy for light should be better. Let me know how it works out.

Thanks, Scott. I sure will. I gotta try and get some more pictures taken so I can post them on the Share Photos Forum. Can't get one of the Gator, cause I think it went back down to Louisiana. :D:D

I am trying to understand about the Teleconverters. I will be getting the 100-400L series lens, to place on my 300d. Will I be able to use the 1.4x or 2x converter? I need more DEPTH, without loosing the sharpness. That is why I returned my Sigma 50-500 lense. Loved the depth, but the sharpness was not to my liking. your help is appreciated

What do you mean by "DEPTH"?

What I mean about DEPTH, when I can ZOOM in on a subject withouth having to physically walk closer. That is what I liked about the 50-500mm. So I just want to know, will an extender work with the 100-400mm. There are times that I can not get to a certain spot and take pictures, so more ZOOM would help
Thanks

Yes. The Canon 1.4x and 2x Extender II's will work on the 100-400 IS L. See the link above to the compatibility chart.

The 1.4x extender works fine with the 100-400 lense. The 2x extender does not work very well, you will need to tape over one of the contacts or focus manually. Stick with the 1.4x, it is much better.
