Our studio has been using 2 D30s for about a year. We use them for high school seniors, families(small groups) and back up at weddings. We are in Hawaii and shoot mostly outdoors in very strong sunlight. The 550EX is not strong enough at the beach. I use the small Metz and the Metz ct60-4 and have to manually adjust. I am still not happy with the results. With a film camera I can meter for the sky and flash the subject to match. It does not seem to work this way with the D30...any suggestions for metering or flashes will be appreciated.

i found 550ex quite powerfull even in bright day for fill in flash, maybe you should check custom function no 10 in camera, should be set to 1 (Auto reduction of fill flash should be disable)

maybe u can also try to use two 550ex (remote flash)

canon high flash syncro is great

hope this will help
