Nikon announced the arrival of their new entry level digital camera, D70, with a picture of the camera. I must say, it looks alot better than the DR in it's black and red color scheme. It also has the shape that preferred by the pros.

It's a bit more expensive than Canon, but if it does the job for less than $1500 (camera+lens kit), then alot of people would swing to Nikon.
I'm still happy with my DR.

The info is still seems pretty sketchy.. But it looks like there's some nice healthy competition on the horizon.
Competition of course is good :) I'd like to see Minolta enter the fray as well

The timing of the announcement is interesting - just in case you were 'on the fence' trying to decide whether to get (or ask for) a Digital Rebel for Christmas.
I have been away from photography for a while, and the Internet was not around when I was, but has Nikon (and for that matter, Canon) made a practice of this sort of advance PR, or is Nikon grabbing at straws?

I'm sure if Nikon had it in their power, they would've had this camera out in time for Christmas. The few months headstart that Canon has enjoyed will no doubt take potential sales away from Nikon in the entry-level DSLR market. This will work even more to Canon's advantage as these new users start to buy lenses and accessories. I don't think there's any question that more than a few of those who bought the Rebel did so primarily because there was no direct competition on the market at the time. This is not to say they allwould have necessarily bought the Nikon, or any other $1,000 DSLR, but without question, some would have.
Now, Nikon is going to have to scratch and claw for market share in a class of cameras that Canon presently dominates.
I love it.

The announced price point seems to suggest that Nikon is positioning the D70 somewhere between the DR and the 10D/D100 class. The body design screams "I'm a back up camera" and target squarely the semi-pros/working pros who will manage the budget to get one, Chrismas or not. The pros will spend more on accessories too, so Nikon doesn't have to sell as many camera as Canon does for the same profit. I have many friends who use the D100 and will grab the D70 at an instant, Nikonian is a big crowd. For those who haven't made the digital jump, the D70 will be the one to get.

As Belmondo pointed out, if there had been any chance of them presenting a working prototype before Christmas, they would most likely have done it.
The anouncement is sketchy enough (no mention of pixel count, functions etc.) to allow them to present anything from a 7 MP camera (D70?) to some 4 MP basic model.
Not that that would help them much against the DRebel, but it would surely be in line with their past model politics in this area.
At the moment the meaning of the announcement seems to be more to keep existing Nikonites from defectiong to Canon by Christmas.

Too late (at least for me). Having bought into the Nikon mystique last year, by getting a top-of-the-line (for then) Coolpix, I tired of waiting for Nikon to do something reasonable for the prosumer crowd, and jumped at the Digital Rebel as soon as it came out.
Not having any Nikon SLR glass really helped, too. 8-0
