Ohh dear, yesterday the wife brought me a 100 - 400 IS USM L.

What a fantastic piece of glass!!

Just took some test shots, one of a big high bay light unit, the type they plant in the middle of a round-a-bout. This thing is like 800 yards away, but took the shot free hand and the rig just feels so stable. The image is perfectly sharp, something I could not do, did try, with the 75 - 400 USM.

Only trouble now is, if this is how good L glass is, it could start getting a tad expensive;) :D

Uh, oh! You're in troubLe now! :) It's a great lens, though, isn't it? I'm taking mine out to the wildlife reserve this weekend.

You mean "what a fantastic wife!" right?!? And she's smart too, picked a really nice Lens. Maybe she can talk to my hubby?

Congrats!

What's she done wrong :-) (do you care?...) Obligatory duck shot coming soon?

Congrats on your new Lens, it is indeed a great lens. I find myself shooting sports most of the time with this lens. Have fun and post some pics.

Phil - I agree it is a very nice piece of Canon glass. I have developed many "new-friends" once they know I loan it out.
When you really get into it, you may find that it goes just a bit soft at both ends. Mine has a 'sweet' range of about 105 to 375mm. The only time you may notice a bit of softness is wide open at both ends of the range. I mention this only as a possiblity, if so, at least you know there is nothing wrong with the lens itself.
It is physically tough, I've whacked mine on more than one occasion, with no discernable problems. It's a long one ain't it?
Forget the push-pull controversy about dust. I shoot horse shows and theres nothing dirtier or dustier. After three years, it shows nary a sign of contamination.
Again - Enjoy

Thanks for all the replies. Yes I've got a Lovely wife:D

To be honest, at the moment I could ask her for any bit of kit and she would say yes. Just spent the night in hospital after a nasty angina attack:( But as I'm also a nice chap I'll spare her credit card, for the time being;)

All I've got to do now is pop a few more pills before I lug that heavy chunk of glass around :D
