It was about time i got the lens a good head and tri-pod, as using a mono-pod for nature photography is not really suitable.

So i got -

Wimberly Gimble Head - Version II

And

Gitzo G1548 - Series 5 for the legs

Oh and the Wimberley p-40 plate

Some pics of them(taken with my dads lumax ;) )

As you can see by this shot it can really get low aswell :D  .Oh and yes the legs are carbon fibre ;) .

The Wimberley gimble head is really fantastic. The lens with the cam weigh alot and even i cant hold them up to my eye for that long. But when they are on the head they become weight-less, with all round movement.I can move the lens around with just my finger and thumb with ease.Plus its very well balanced, with the lens allways returning to the level'd position.

Just thought i'd share my new toys :D

whats a "downsize screw"?

Thanks i'll have alook on they're website

Sorry its not a screw. Its a brass reducer bushing.

There two screw in threads on the lens. One alot bigger than the other, so i nead a reducer for the other screw on the plate(you should now what i mean).

Nice set u,p Just a quick question what did you have to get on top of the P40 plate so you could use it with the 500?

Congrats

In the middle of the plate is a groove with two sliding screws(they are the same size). As you know on the lens there is two different size threads.Thats why i need to get the brase reducer, which goes in the bigger hole, then both of the screws on the plate can be screwed in.Not just one.

Nice setup, Alan. :)

Now, it would be a LOT better, as in REALLY GREAT, if you lost that UGLY Canon neckstrap and got yourself a really cooooool POTN neck strap for you camera. And just so the 500 didn't get jealous, you could get one for it, too.  ;)

amazing, how is it that the bigma is so much smaller and hand-holdable or monopod-holdable, where as this is a gargantuan tank of a beastly beast

Alan, I don't know about everybody else around here, but I'm not liking this thread or the pictures one measly bit.

Did you post this so I would be incredibly envious?

Did you post this so I would go heavily into debt to own it also?

Did you know I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight after looking at that combination of beauty?

I'm going to call my solicitor immediately and see if your intent behind this post is actionable.

Then, I'm just going to jump out my window. Good thing I live on the ground floor.

Beautiful, just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Nice setup. I have actually ordered the 1548 tripod. I have been using the 1327 with a wimberly sidekick up to now. It was ok with the 500, not great but ok. When I bought the 600 I knew it wasn't going to work longterm. I have already got the Wimberly II and am using it on an aluminum tripod for now and it is really heavy compared to the carbon fibre. I will continue to use the 1327 with the sidekick for my 300 f/2.8.

Nice setup you have there.

PacAce - hmmm i might just do that :D

MDJAK - lol that was great reading your comment

bluej511 - Yeah i would love a 1D.......................Thats my future buy ;)

ssim - I was thinking about getting the Wimberley sidekick. But i did'nt like the idea of the weight of the lens/cam hanging on its side.Surely sometime something has got to give  , and i dont want a £4000+ lens hitting the floor  .Thats the reason i went for the Gimble.Regards the legs, well i bought the best ;) :D .
