Hey everyone, I've been looking for a nice P&S camera for my sister-in-law lately. It doesn't have to be anything too crazy, but I'd really like her to get something new that will last and be pretty easy for her to use. Originally she was looking at a Sony T10, but after purchaisng my Rebel XT and have seen some Canon P&S, I think that Canon not only sets the bar for SLRs but for P&S as well (not that theres anything wrong with Sony, my T7 is just fine).

The first website I checked was DPreview, after reading both the review for the SD700IS and the A700, the only problem was that the A700 didn't have the IS so pics at around ISO800 didn't come out as good as they hoped. I don't think this is really going to be an issue to my sister (she doesn't mind the use of flash) and she isn't going to be using the manual modes (at least not until I start giving her some insight, even then she might ignore it). The real thing that my sister is looking for is for image quality, and its not going to be at huge resolutions (but I'm looking for something that'll still hold the IQ at good resolutions just in case she ever decides to have something developed), so it really boils down to, what camera would recommend based on IQ (anything else would probably just be a plus), the SD700IS or the A710IS.

Sorry for the long read and thanks for the help!

I have had the SD700 for about 2 months now, it is a great easy to use camera. I have yet to shoot with the A710 but it is a Canon so it cant be too bad. Great thing about the SD700 which is why I went with it was it is nice and small, easily fits in a pocket. My vote is for the SD700 but like I said, I have no knowledge of the A710. Good luck!

I'm hoping to find the A710 IS available in this area. I think it would be the ideal point and shoot camera, but first we have to get reports from people as to whether the IS works as well on this camera as it does on my S1 IS. I'm also waiting for detailed reviews. I am thinking (hoping) it is as good as other cameras have been. Some nice things we know: it will be very easy on batteries and it will be practical to use alkaline AA's. I use these in my A70 and A540 and you can take hundreds of pictures on a set of alkaline batteries.

I have the same question - buying a camera for my mother who I think will like the IS. Ridiculous that S3 IS is similar price to SD 700 IS when the new 710 IS has been announced. No price or availability on 710, 700 seems perfectly adequate, S3 far too heavy for my mother.

Unless they pull a finger out with the 710 it will be the 700.
