These were all shot with a 1D MK11N. I'm a bit disapointed in the noise at ISO 1600 with this body. My 20D is much better at 1600 for noise. Is there anything that I can do to remedie this for the 1D?

I put one of these thru noise ninja and it cleaned up very nice. I noticed the same thing when I moved to the "N". Your exif shows a SS of 1/320 which is slow for volleyball. Because of the lack of light in our gym I stay away from a 2.8 lens. I normally use the 85 f/1.8 and the 135 f/2, custom white balance, iso 800, manual at 1/500 or 1/640 and Raw. RSP gives me an extra stop when I pp. If I need to go to iso1600 then I hit the files with noise ninja.

Thanks for the input. It's true that the gym's that I shot these in were horrible for light and thet is a problem with the shutter speed for sure. I was trying to stay away from Noise Ninja if I could, but it looks like with then 1D, that is going to be the way to go to clean up files over 1600 ISO. I'lll have to try and usse my 85mm f1.8 more I guess.

Nice photos - below is a workup with some overall color corrections and some touchups to the striker and removed the lt side hand.

The bottom is straightened and some cloned in sides and top to even thing out

Hey Quasi... good to see ya posting around here again. The shots look great.. sure they cold use a little color correction and all, but overall the action captured - the stuff you can't fix - looks really good. Congrats on the new camera body - I am still stalling and making due with my older 1d. Oh, and I now know where Taylorsville is.... ate at the Roadhouse there this summer. I won't be shooting HS sports this year.... kinda sad but won't miss the dark gyms. Anyway.... welcome back

Thanks Mark, dang I wish I would've known that you were in town. I would've taken you to dinner and picked your brain over shooting techniques and the such..........lol. Been to the Roadhouse several times, pretty good place. The high school is just down the street about a block. Yeah I made the jump to the 1D MK11n and love it. I've kept my 20D also as a back up, but toying with the idea of selling it to get the coveted 300mm f2.8........(heavy sigh).
Just about have the wife talked into the 300 anyway.......lol.
But I'm not to happy about the high noise at the 1600-3200 ISO level though.
The 20D was much better at 1600.

Interesting..... well - if you don't need IS on your 300, check out KEH.Com, they have a few of them used and could save you some money. They are very reputable. Sorry I missed ya.... if I make it out there again, I'll ping ya.

Hey that would be great.......give me a hollar. I think that I'll be posting more on here in the near furture. I miss this place and all the great folks here. I have learned TONS from everyone here. I just got out of the habit of posting, I guess I figured that I was getting pretty boring. Anyway, thanks for all the comments everyone and all the help.
