Just wondering if any of you teach photography in some way, paid or not?
Im just curious, because Im constantly helping people out with the basics of photography, such as composition, DoF, exposure etc etc... I just do it cos I love it and I want to help people out, and although Ive never been paid for it yet, Id love to be able to tutor in the future.
And do you find that other photographers have opinions on you teaching? How did you get into it? And why do you do it?
Im just curious. :)
ETA: I should add that I might be doing it for selfish reasons, because if I teach people how to take better photos, then I dont have to look at bad work  Is that bad?

I'd like to do it. I'm considering running workshops at my local club.

I've said this before but, Tim should charge for some of his advise .....he has the natual ability to make a complicated subject seem simple. Good common sense goes a lomg way in teaching.
I'm a corporate trainer in my full time job, If my photog skills ever get where I want them. I'd love to teach others.

I am doing one day a week at a local junior high for the next few months. It is a pilot project. In the area that I live in if you don't do sports or aren't musically inclined, then the schools here can be a pretty boring place.
They have arranged for the donation of some point and shoot cameras from the corporate world. I have donated one as well. They have ended up with a combination of Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras which is fine as it gives a broader exposure to the differences in the various manufacturers.
I'm responsible for creating my own materials. My approach is start with the theory and work my way through to finally taking some shots. In order to give them some exposure to the DSLR world, I might drag all my gear in some day.
It doesn't pay allot but that isn't why I am doing it. I want to be able to give back a little to this life that has been fairly good to me.

I'm considering writing a beginner's book. Not a beginner's book like all the other formulaic books but something useful.

I do, but only informally. I try to do it as much as I can here on the forums too.

A lifetime ago I did some instruction at the college level in both shooting and in darkroom, and more recently (but not currently) I did some at the Parks & Recreation level.

I taught photography and darkroom at the local high school in an after hours program for a few years (don't do it any more). I wrote a couple of handouts for the class to use. I loved it, but simply don't have the time to do it anymore.

I don't have the time and the patience to teach. And after explaining once concept twice, it gets boring.
I wanna be taught and expand my skills instead, because I don't really know that much myself yet.

I teach my yearbook staff to shoot during the last period of the school day and during sporting events. The rest of the time is devoted to my special education students. :)

I do a little bit with my photo club. We've had a couple of newbie days where we approach a photo op in a workshop format, informally of course. Would love to make some money sharing knowledge but am almost as happy doing it for free.

I am currently teaching a friend of mine. It is becoming more challenging that I had first expected. I think I'll just buy her a book....

I've been teaching part-time for 16 years now. Keeps me on my toes. When I'm shooting I have to think about why I do what I do and how would I explain it. I have a new challange though. I just moved and everyone tells me about this guy who does wildlife photography in town. I finally met him and stopped in to see some of his work (that everyone says is great.) Boy, not a single pix in focus or exposed correctly. I was lucky - he did not ask me what I thought. I'm debating on how to help him but many just do not want to hear the truth about their work.

I teach fulltime. My background is 11 years in graphic design, about five in teaching. I teach a course that is designed to introduce juniors in H.S. to layout, design, printing, photography, pre-press, web, and I even teach typography to them. The kids then come back as a senior and focus on one of those areas. In my professional experience I was much more than a graphic designer; I was lucky to have been able to gain experience in all of the above. Before I started teaching fulltime I taught evening courses to adults in Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, and basic design. It is a great job, and I just had a former adult photoshop student contact me and thank me for helping him to go on to an art school, and onto a professional 3D animation career. That's when it comes full-circle. :D

I don't teach photography yet, but I've been asked to put together a class on evidence photography for my agency. Pretty much all of the cameras the deputies use are point-and-shoots of various descriptions, so I'll have to approach it from that angle. I think if I can teach them how to get an in-focus closeup I'll have won half the battle.

I've done it, & stopped doing it formally 'cause the pay is insulting & I don't see why the university should make more than I do on it. I'd rather donate my time to the forum.

I teach two photography classes (comp and exposure). Both to students (adults) who pay me and for free to the yearbook classes at two local schools. It's very fulfilling.

I'm not a teacher by a long shot and certainly not a fountain of knowledge when it comes to digital photography, but I (like many of you) LOVE imparting knowledge to friends or collegues regardless of the simplicities. Being able to advise work mates on products or explain in 'lay terms' some of the finer details always leaves me feeling '...how cool - I actually taught someone - something!"
Obviously I'm biased toward Canon products, but I will often suggest purchase other brands if need be depending on budgets, needs etc. E.g., a workmate wanted an easy to use point-and-shoot for a UK trip...big dials, numbers and screen. I suggested she look at the Sony xxxx. She bought it a monthand a half ago and is absolutely WRAPPED! The prints were amazing as well. Two other collegues taking an interest in DSLR both purchased the 350d on separate occasions based on trials and recommendations.
A very good friend of mine (m/racing photog) whom I've been 'mentoring' for some time, nearly purchased the 1d IIn. Alas he ended up buying the Fuji S3 because of its ergonomics and price. But still, being able to teach someone - something about digital photography gives me a great feeling of satisfaction and confirms why I love photography so much!

Hi, every one, some one can teach me how can I re-size a image for put in my avatar at 80x80 pixel 3 days ago, & by now you might have come to the conclusion that maybe you left something out? Like the software you have? Size of the original pic? ;)

I've been teaching photography informally (meaning not getting paid) for a while now but I'm going to be getting my first formal teaching assignment (meaning I'm going to get paid for it) this coming February at a local high school. And I'm really excited about it and looking forward to it. :)
[Edit: Oops! Just realized this is a old thread. :o How embarrassing. :o
