Mmm, bigger lens. There are some strange artefacts on your shot. Have you over-sharpened it?

They're not artifacts, they're bits of the dust cloud that was kicked up by the British sattelite that crashed into it a few days ago...
Not a bad shot though, is that a pretty big zoom on the picture? Looks like it's up near 75% or something...

Reshoot it.
Use manual focus , maybe f8. Tripod, cable release/remote, etc....
You can use ISO 100 for less noise, and adjust exposure time... it shouldn't matter, you're using a tripod anyway, right?

I took the picture in manual mode and manual focus. ( As moon looks like a spec on the screen of the camera, its hard to make out whether the shot was perfect or not) Yes had to use tripod with cable release. I have tried ISO 100 too but that aint so clear as this one. That setting would give me more brighter ones with less clarity than this one.
Suggest a setting and probably I can see if I can do it tonight or if i have already tried it, i would upload that one too. I dont seem to get sharp snaps. Any tips/tricks to get it??

Try this: AV mode, lens, ISO 100, f5.6, 1/160, Handheld... Good luck...Alex

Rjohnston: Now that is a nice shot!!! You might get away with near a 50% crop before the image gets funky....But over cropping kills everything that counts.... Nice image.Alex

Chakri: I am assuming this isn't a prank post.... How did you manage to get a brown moon.... Did you forget to take the lens cap off? Was it shot over the barbecue while cooking burgers to the consistancy of charcoal? If not you need to cut back on your smoking.... I have tried to imagine how a very bright moon gave you this result.... Try these settings and if it doesn't work for you, you need to send the camera and lens in for some serious exorcising:-).... Set camera to AV mode or manual either one.. ISO to 100, Aperture to f5.6, Shutter speed at 1/160. And if you are shooting in AV mode the camera will set the shutter speed for you automatically.... Use these settings and you don't need tripod or remote shutter release or anything else.... Shooting the moon is very easy as long as you can focus it which is basically infinity + or - a little bit.... Your images should be very bright with no issues.... Make sure there is nothing in front of your lens like, forest fire smoke, clouds, a pair of sunglasses, or a baseball cap..... I don't want to sound nasty and this isn't meant to be more a long the lines of getting you laughing about this situation, but it is definately the help that you need to listen to.... Block every other piece of advice out of your head and just set the camera up as I have outlined for you and you will have excellent moon shots.... I have been doing this for years including astroimaging with telescopes. Just listen, learn, do it, and succeed........Alex

It was full moon Paul and i took the shoot just on the rise of the moon. Moon is generally orangish red during that time. If you want i could provide you with the raw file. I presume you cant generate a raw file can you( not that i know of..)
I have tried various settings from 100mm-200mm on the lens with different ISO settings but not a single one gives me more clarity than this setting so was wondering where did i err out... Now i was wondering if someone can help me with photoshop to sharpen the snap as i think it is around 100% crop and texture of the moon doesnt appear clear more you zoom in without any special setting.

How did you manage to get a brown moon....
Possibly the WB was on cloudy or shade....I've done that before and the moon has looked copper colored...

Hi, here's my first take on the moon. The color was not corrected as this was what I saw with naked eyes on that evening. Shot using 70-200 with TC 1.4.
260mm, ISO 400, f4 1/320 sec.
