It's ISO3200 time at the speedway track at the moment (luvly jubbly) so I've been experimenting with some B&W conversions... this has left me pondering a self-indulgent B&W speedway project   ...

Anyway, here's a quick example... the rider on the left is this year's World Speedway Champion Jason Crump on his way to a 15 point maximum...

Thanks for looking!

Nice Gavin

Great B&W conversion, wish I could make them come out like that.

To me, it looks a little less like a photograph and more like a drawing...maybe my eyes are flooded with San Miguel..big night last night!

Sorry, Gavin, but this doesn't move me in the way that your colour speedway shots normally do. I will admit that I am not the world’s biggest B&W fan.

Nice! Don't ponder, act.I'm an expert ponderer

Here's the colour version (complete with even more overzealous noise reduction) for good measure:

I often think about doing that with classic cars, Gavin, and then I think “helmets”. The whole period thing just gets blown away with modern safety headgear. The “sci-fi special” being worn by the guy on the left is a point in case.

p.s. I prefer the colour version.

Glenn knows as well as anyone that I like and do a lot (possibly too much, on occasion) of black and white. I do it in camera in RAW and because I like it or feel that the shot I am taking has certain qualities that are better shown in black and white.

What you say about classic cars in black and white is true, it doesn't look like the 1950s or 60s no matter how much you may want it to but, if you take or put things in black and white for the shot itself, rather than that effect, the result is more likely to please.

I very much like Gavin's shot in Black and White (and it's great in colour too) for the qualities it has as a black and white photograph (I cannot see it as a throwback to the golden age of speedway, I wasn't there and haven't seen photographs of it) such as the contrast in the riders, the perceived greater bokeh with the lower contrast background. Those are the technically pleasing things but it just works well - one vote for the black and white.
