I have just received a Canon Rapid Charger CG-560... everything seems fine but I am having difficulty fully understanding the instruction about attaching the 'ferrite core' to the 'Compact Power Adaptor's cable' when using this in conjunction with the CA-560 charger.

The addendum illustration that came with the CG-560 charger tells one to fix the 'ferrite core' onto the cable 6cm from the body of the CA-560 .... yet... at the other end of this cable, that originally came with my G5 camera, is another of these ferite devices.... the question is... do I take off the old ferite core... and attatch the new one at the other end or do I now need to have this device at both ends...or what?

The other question I must ask the 'teccies'.... what is the purpose of this ferite core?

I wish to take the 'off camera battery charger' with me when staying in hotels and do not want to leave my camera on charge in my room.

These ferrite cores are to reduce the amount of electromagnetic radition that comes from the cable. Any cable with an electrical signal going thru it is basically an antenna. It essentially so that the product companies can classify their products as office products or other classes of product. Back a few years ago, it used to be FCC Class A, B etc. I don't know if it's changed in the last 5 years or so. It also prevents the device from interfering with PC monitors, wireless phones etc.

I never use them unless they cause a problem with some other equipment that I use. I'll probably drop dead from cancer tomorrow because of it.....

Ummm, Darren:

The FCC, EPA, and Ralph Nader are all on the phone and would like to speak with you. Do you want me to take a message?

Yes, it is not a bad idea to leave one ferrite core suppressor on a cable, and it might reduce interference to a TV or radio. However, two would be redundant in 99% of all cases.

The two types of electromagnetic radiation that will get out of an electronic gadget are "radiated" and "conducted." The idea is that this suppressor takes care of the noise conducted out on the power line.
