With Canon US warranty that is? There are plenty of places on the internet selling this camera for less than $1200, but I have no clue what kind of warranty they carry. Any information would be appreciated.

I wouldn't go for anything much below $1500. Unless you want a lot of hassle! Go thru B&H there are many people that have experienced them and are really a great place to buy from. They ship internationally too! We have had someone order from them and shipped to Norway that I know of. I'm in England. I get my stuff in 5 days, usually.

This is a quote that I made on another thread:

I smell something nasty here, a really woofy (rotten) fish!
Be ye forewarned that prices like that are probably of the no package, no deal type, or dodgy dealers. It could also be greymarket, that is like selling a Europe version in the US. The warantee is no good in the US, and all you have is potentially a lot of headache. Another piont is that something to me seems fishy, but can't put my finger on it. I can't confirm this, but it is of the "buyer beware" type. How on earth can they sell the 10D for $1189, body only? It is just short $1500 from B&H and Ritzcamera. Run!!! ...and best have your cash/credit card with you!!!!
The flip side, is if you happen to be in NJ, go pay a visit and see what they are like. Again I'm not convinced. I deal exclusively with B&H in NYC and they are a world class store! I'd happily a little pay more for piece of mind and not worry about it. Beware of other dodgy dealers in the NYC area, especially Crooklyn! The choice is yours, but who is the weakest link? Hopefully not you!
Goodbye.
I guess you have to see Anne Robinson do it to understand it. It's a riot.

Just my 5 pence...

You guys are walking on some pretty thin ice there. Even if you do get a camera without credit hassles or whatever other underhanded scheme these slimeballs dream up, you may find yourself with a second-hand camera. Either a refurb, or one that was returned for whatever reason.

Buy from a reputable company. What you save in $$$ will more than likely be given up in frustration, many, many phone calls, etc, etc, etc.

We're not talking that much money either. Just $150-$200 or so. My piece is mind is worth MUCH more than that. Good luck, and if you buy from one of those near-black-market companies, don't come crying here when your credit card starts showing mysterious charges or you get no product and the phone (if they even have a phone number listed) plays the "Sorry, this number has been disconnected and there is no new number" tune.

If you searched the archives, you will probably find a few more comments concerning this. I know you will, because I made a comment about advice and that I have to sleep at night. Where was that??? I found it:
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21052
However this was in regards to mass storage option whilst away from computer. Same applies and will requote myself thanks to cut and paste:

I was figuring this person is a complete newbie and wanted to get him set up reliably, and not worry about it. I have to sleep at night too after making reccomendations. The end of the day, I was going for the safe, reliable, and no worries answer. I too trust B&H for any amount I spent, they have come thru every time and wouldn't expect anything less. I completely understand what you are talking about with exceptional deals and one of them was www.expresscamera.com offering a Canon EOS 10D for $1189. No way would I shop there! Someone posted that here and it is the low-cost Rebel thread. I went and had a look at the site for giggles and I wasn't impressed. I don't think there is anything worse than newbies going for one of those exceptional deals and then getting taken to the cleaners and then posting on this forum about their experience...

A note on the above, I do recommend using pricegrabber if you know what you want, but the trick is to look at what the reputable dealers are offering as prices and if the others are way off, I avoid them, but if within 10% and not a serious chunk of money, I will try them out. If they pass then I will use them again for a larger amount, until as I now do with B+H I am willing to trust them with any amount I am willing to apend.

If nobody gives them alternative sources a chance, there will be no competition after awhile.

B+H is fantastic, but I occasionally go elsewhere for certain items if I can get it cheaper. I just avoid the "exceptional" deals since I would not trust those enough with any of my money...

I (Canuck) also said:
Cheapest places are probably dicey at best. You might try something like www.dealtime.com, or www.pricegrabber.com. I would reccommend against this, and go thru www.bhphotovideo.com or www.ritzcamera.com. Ritz will ship for free in the US if over $100, and I got the 10D thru them and free shipping. I'm not sure what charges are like international shipping. I know B&H ships international and think Ritz does as well.

Option 2, is getting another mass storage device like the Flashtrax drive, Xs Drive, and the like to dump the pics to when you get full CF cards. That is far cheaper! How much would 40GB of CF cost? Lots!

Thanks Canuck,

2 things ...

1, I will look into the International Shipping, but I am totally with you about not going so cheap that you end up buying from dodgy dealers -> end up 'paying' more in the long run, whether it be a faulty product or annoyances in transfers.

2. You mentioned getting a mass storage device ... do you know of any internet resources that discuss/have pictures of these so I can get a better understanding of what they actually are.

Are they simply external hard drives that you plug in? If so, how do you conntect to computer? If not, what exactly are they?

Canuck writing again: Answer:
They have a flash card slot for dumping the CF to respective drive; and it is USB from drive to computer at least on the FlashTrax drive and can't imagine bieng any other way on the others. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I know this is a long post, but should help!

If you want a pleasant experience in buying a camera, the cheapest price isn't the way to go. JandR linked above has a thirty day no hastle return policy. They and BandH(two weeks) are reliable and will handle your problems. BestBuy is also a good choice, but they don't sell alot of camera equipmet if your looking to build a relationship with a dealer. If you do a search above you'll get an idea about where people have been satisfied and where people have been beat.

Whatever you do, if you order via internet or mail, use a Credit Card.

Do not use cash, or money order, or debit card, or any other form of payment, only a credit card.

The advice to not pay less that $1499 or whatever is a little short sighted. It is possible that there may be a store with a better price than that, (Cnet.com has a certified vendor who has it for $1399 .)

BUT more important than any price is to use a credit card. If a vendor gives you the shaft or goes bankrupt before the send your camera, you are protected.

I've seen too many otherwise rational people scared to use their card across the net. Its just dumb not to!

If by some tiny slim chance, your card number is stolen and used, the most you will be on the hook for is $50, and most credit card companies will waive that fee.

If you send a check, or money order, or anything else, you have no recourse if the vendor fails to deliver. Yes, sometimes you may be able to sue in small claims court or something similar.
But, with the credit card, you call the company, and (yes you may have to deal with the "Press 1 for blah blah" stuff) the credit card company will help you with your problem.

No, I don't work for a credit card company, but I know lots of folks with sad stories of sending checks or money orders, and not getting the merchandise.

Discounts not withstanding...like Dell offers 10% off. The end of the day, it is ur money, we just don't want to see you get the shaft and then come back to us. You know the rest, first your advice means nothing, then comes the protection plans, and then you might as well well I don't know what the next step is. You get the point.

Check out www.bizrate.com. They rate businesses based on shopper feedback. Great site.

Also, if you buy with an American Express, AMEX will add a year to your warranty. I believe it's called their "instant rewards" program. Check into it.

Good luck.

Absoloutely use a credit card in case you have a problem. But remember that this is not going to fully protect you from an unscrupulous dealer. Shipping charges are not refundable, and many less then reputable dealers have 10-15% restocking fees on returns. So with shipping fees (to you and back to the retailer) and $150 restocking fee you could have bought it for $1499 and been happy.
