Yesterday I got my 420EX flash.
Everything works and WHAT a difference it makes, this is the best upgrade ever :D.

Only one question.
There is a highspeed sync setting, according to the manual this should be names Hwith the flashsymbol, but on my 10D there is only the flash symbol ?

any ideas what's going on ?

Greetings,
Frank

High speed sync flash must be used when you want the shutter speed to be faster than 1/200.

On the 10D below 1/200 the shutter is never fully open at any one instance. Since normal flash produces a single bright flash this would mean that the shutter would be covering some part of the sensor when the flash went off. So you'd get an image with part of it black where the shutter was still covering the sensor when the flash went off. HS puts out multiple lower-powered flashes so the entire frame gets flash as the shutter opening moves across the sensor.

On the 10D in Tv with normal flash on you can not set the shutter speed to anything faster than 1/200. As soon as you flip the 420 to HS you can set any shutter speed you wish.

Here's a long tutorial on EOS flash - long, but absolutely packed with information. http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

Do not worry! Just move the HS switch to ON, set your camera above 1/200 and make a shot. Keep in mind that GN is falling down (see page 50 of your instrictions booklet).

I tried some things today, and I LOVE it.

Even on 1/4000st second the flash works like a charm.
And even in continues shooting I can make at least 6 shots in a burst did not try more :D.

I never thought he would be THAT quick.

Congratulations on picking up an EX speedlight..

Be aware that SLR flash photography isn't always that easy.. Here are a couple of links you might want to bookmark:
