View Full Version : 85 mm 1.2 Broken!!

Hi guys...
Yesterday I dropped my canon 85 mm 1.2 from my hand and into the floor, only a drop of approx. 30 cm, but anyway now I can see that a piece glass is "loose" near the mount ( not broken, just loos ), and a litte "ring" is broken, Im having trouble unscrewing the screws, so im not going to remove the piece of glass :-( removing it so that it might not scratch the other glas inside.
ok so here's the question: Does anyone have any thoughts about if its dead, or its possible to fix things like that and does parts exsist to fix indsides of lenses like that.
Plz Help, im out of my mind, this lens really was my baby....

Send it in - Canon will re-mount the lens, align the optics, and calibrate it. Not for free, but they have all the tools, test equipment, and clean shop needed for that task.

Master-9, he told his wife that he sent the 70-200 for repair and the darn Canon service returned him the 300 f/2.8 :D
Seriously, I remember him sending his 85L for repair.

That's an incredibly high price for repairs! I'm SO sorry. I'd be heartbroken too...

That's an incredibly high price for repairs! I'm SO sorry. I'd be heartbroken too...Yes it is. In the U.S. this lens costs about 2000 USD new. Is it possible to send it to a Canon Service Center to find out if the repair costs would be less than quoted by the Authorized Dealer?

That is a high repair cost, but then again location might influence that some. Was the service center run by Canon, or was it an authorized third party?

I'm going to tell you...if it where my lens I'd send it to Canon before I'd bury it. I mean hell, this is a lens I'd sell my left...well I want really bad but I am too cheap to buy. Send it to Canon anyway....OR SEND IT TO ME! PM ME! PLEASE!!!!

I'm very suspicious of that high of a repair cost (although I suppose I have no reason to be). There are so many instances where expensive lens have suffered significant damage and been repaired, granted in the U.S., by Canon itself for a few hundred dollars -- sums ranging between 15-30% of the lens cost.
I wouldn't give up all hope quite yet.

A very big ouch... Just send it in to Canon and get a "real" estimate.

That lens was just available used on B&H for 1399.
New, it sold for 1500 U.S.
How can it cost more to fix than to buy new?
I guess it's the old saying, the sum of its parts is greater than the whole. That's why they steal cars and chop 'em up. The parts are worth more than the entire car.
I feel your pain. I dropped my camera a long time ago. It cost $560 to fix.

I broke the manual focus on my 100-400 (and they replaced a craked plate) and it ran me only $350 (or about 30% of the cost of the lens) most of which was labor.
I broke my 28-135 IS lens out of adjustment and that ran about $150 or again about 30% of the cost.
finally I broke my 28-70/2.8L (broke thread holes and they had to replace a plate that holds the lens together) and that cost about $250 to fix (again mostly labor)
So always between 25-30% of the cost of the lens to repair out of warranty. I can't see it costing more then the cost new to repair unless they can't get parts any more and are down to cannibalizing other broken lenses. The 85/1.2 mk1 should not be so far out of date yet they are down to that point.
I would find another service center.
Heck even my old Hasselblad 500 EL/M which needed a lot of servicing and repair this year only cost 1/2 what they are going for used these days. And I thought that was a bit obsessive.

$2500 for a new AF mechanism? That's insane. Was it an authorized Canon center, or your local camera shop tech? I'd find out about sending it in to Canon and see what they say if it's the latter. Hell, you can buy a new lens for that much money - and the glass is the expensive part, not the AF!

Dude...that seriously sucks...if you want to go out on a limb...I would box that bad boy up and send it to someone here in the states to see what Canon NJ or Canon CA has to say about it. Can't believe they would really want more than new price to perform a repair...seems like a second opinion is in order.

I agree with the above posts. It will probably be worth your while (and money) to send it to a Canon factory service centerto have it repaired. It shouldn't be more than $500 or so to fix.
That, or you can ship it to me since I live ten minutes from Canon Irvine. I'll take it off your hands and I'll even pay shipping :D

It's such a great lens. Do everything you can think of to get it repaired. Only Canon authorized service centers...

Hi again guys, I did not expect that many reply's on that topic....
Well I will tell you a bit more specefic what is wrong, here's the Offer The Authorized Canon Center gave me:
all prices are in Danish Crowns DKK
So in total with repair work and these parts.
12,524 DKK = Approx: 2151 $
So its dead, maybe the insurance will pay something I dont know.... think sending it to the *States is a bit out og bounce....
The place i had it looked at is really an Authorized Canon thing without a question.

Mr Emjay,
that really really sucks, I feel for you. Well at least if you know whats wrong, you can describe the problem accurately to other support/repair staff. It wont hurt to send them an email explaining the problem and asking for a quote.
Hope that someone can give you a sensible quote
All the best

Autorized Canon dealer and Canon Service Center are two different things. I would get a quote from the later.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I'd love to see pics of what the lens looks like. I'd also echo the comments about an actual Canon Service Center, rather than an authorized one. And if it was an actual Canon Service Center, then maybe I'd investigate having someone in the USA submitting it to Canon NJ or Canon Irvine for you (since I believe it has to originate from, and have a return address to, a US address).
Best of luck, and I'm really sorry to hear about the lens.
