View Full Version : S4?

I've been shopping for an s3 as of late, and noticed that a week ago the average price for the s3 dropped from $420 to around $350. Could this mean that Canon is coming out with a new camera? Possibly an S4? My prediction is that they release this new camera (if there is going to be one) around thanksgiving so that anyone who wants to buy one for Christmas can do just that, without the stores being sold out. Any thoughts?

IMO, an S4 would be an announcement at the consumer level, and I think Canon has made all of them that they are going to for the Christmas season.
There may be some new announcements connected to the Photokina show, which starts in early October, but they will likely be professional-level products.
My 2 cents.
Have Fun,

It's certainly a possibility. I would think that it would be safe to wait until Canon is done announcing products at Photokina.

I'd say either an S4 or something even more impressive that you HAVE TO HAVE.

An APS-C CMOS sensor???

An APS-C CMOS sensor???
That would be a sweet camera - a sequil to the Pro-1 with a big, fat, clean sensor and a respectable lens.

In front of the 6MP (from the 10D/300D) APS-C sensor, how about a 17-180f/2.8L lens.

How about:
- 20x optical lens
- 1/6000
- 10MP
- 2.5 screen?
- APS-C sensor
- complete manual control.
- a viewfindert that lets you REALLY focus on a spot using a dot not a @#$%@^ square.
- priced at $600-$700
I will buy one in a heartbeat. I already have the S3 and love it.
Also a bit larger...

I note that Jessops are saying that the S3 IS is discontinued. Is this due to some inner knowledge of Canon's intentions or some other concern about the future of this format of camaera? Any thoughts?

Well, as it is now mid-February, 2007, and the S3 IS is still for sale, I'd say that Canon hasn't discontinued it, yet. FWIW, the S2 IS is still for sale at a lot of sources. (Amazon apparently sells more S2's than S3's.)

That's cuz the S2 in silver is SOOOO classy looking. The all black S3 looks so...well, DSLRish.  ;)

It might not come at all? I have heard nothing about it.
Perhaps I should buy S3 instead.

Well, you won't regret it. It's a fantastic camera. Just keep in mind three things when shooting video.
1) When you zoom, there will be some noise
2) Use the LCD rather than the viewfinder because the microphone will pick up your breathing.
3) If you snap a still while shooting video, there will be about a 1/2 second gap in the resulting video.

But Im unsure, there's too many cameras to choose between, and I hate choices. The S3 is getting a bit old, like does it have any advantages towards the 710 except the zoom?

I don't see that as any problems.

Well you can also zoom during video; I like that!

The S3 rocks for video. In fact, I use the video as much - if not more - as I take pictures with it.
I'll make a DVD slideshow with ProShow Producer, I put the pictures from my 5D along with short video clips 10-45 seconds from the S3 and the effect is really awesome.

I had someone come in today asking about it. They have an S1 and I told them to go ahead and get the S3 or S2 even. Both great cameras but they want to wait for the S4 and i said if there will be one, it won't be till the end of the year because Canon's announced all the cameras for the Spring line. I did mention the TX thing, but w/e...
I love my S3 but if the S4 is prosumer, i might have to think about it instead of the Panasonic.
