i was going to order the sigma 100-300 f/4 for my sons soccer. instead i couldnt resist , i ordered the ( i cant believe it ) sigma 120-300 f/2.8. I CANT AFFORD THIS LENS!!! One part of my brain said, its for your sons images and for that reason you must have the best (120-300 ), the (smarter) other side of my brain said the 100-300 f/4 will be enough! I called the retailer and i tried to say sigma 100-300 f/4 but 120-300 f/2.8 came out!!!!
oh..... what have i done.....
i hate when i do this, THAT LENS BETTER ROCK!!!
if i dont post images within a week from today - you know what my wife has done to me....
maybe it was a dream......... nah, they just emailed my sigma 120-300 confirmation.:D

Congrats, troy!
Hint... show your wife the cost of the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L IS plus a 300 f/2.8 L IS so she'll know how much you saved ;)

LOL I know how you feel. Had the same reaction when I pressed "Confirm Order" for my 70-200 f2.8 L IS... I can NOT afford this lens, so why OMG did I do it??? Because... beyond doubt, altho I am and will remain a hobbyist and never a professional, I am obsessed with photography... Had read so many reviews and forums about the lens... This one will allow me to capture images that might elude me with other lenses (and will elude me anyway until I become familiar with it!)... And the types of shots I hope to achieve with it are ones that will be a great portion of the kind of stuff I like to shoot and not rare incidents... So I dove in head first... IT WAS SCAREY!! But am so happy I did, and you will be too that you got your Sigma. :)

I know the feeling....I have a 70-200 2.8IS getting here tommorow and I broke the bank to get it! I hope I fall in love with it and never want to give it up. Not feel it is overkill for an hobbiest photographer. The size and weight will be something I have to consider...if this doesn't go well, I may try the 70-300 DO.

I hate to step in on the OP's thread, but I posted some soccer pictures last night in the sports forum. I need to test my copy for focus issues, but I am pretty sure that it is just me:confused: .
So here is a link to that thread if you are interested in sample shots.

People who say their hobby is photography, are wrong.
Their hobby is collecting EXPENSIVE pieces of photographic equipment!
Enjoy ;-)

At the risk of raining on a parade, why do people insist on congratulating someone for buying something they admit they can't really afford? Many go on to say that it will then be better if they go on to buy their spouse something else that they also can't afford. It's one thing if you're a pro who will make money off the lens. For taking pictures of your son's soccer, likely in daylight, a 100-300F4 is a fine lens and a good bargain, especially used, and IMHO I'd really have to NEED the 2.8 to justify the price difference.
I "could" afford any lens available, but the expense has to compete with other priorities in my (and my families) life and to me that means I need to be able to do something with that lens I can't realistically do with a cheaper alternative. If photography was my profession or my only hobby/interest I might feel differently.

BTW, Lungdoc, you ask why we insist on congratulating him, or anyone else for that matter, when they make a purchase? Most times, IMHO, people say the can't afford something they buy for the effect but is not really the fact. Also, why would you insist on raining on someone's parade? Is that any better?
Fact is, the purchase has already been made. Should we lambast the person? Maybe when they post that their family is going hungry because of their free spending, then we'll flame them, but not before.

It's probably worth it. Right now, the way my 17 year old daughter is behaving, I'd trade her for the 400 f2.8. My wife, on the other hand, would be a bit more than displeased though.

Well people must inhabit a different financial and spousal world than I do if spending that much more than intended is a minor issue and spending another equal amount on something shiny is a solution. It must be nice to be free of competing priorities for that kind of money - savings? vacation? home improvement? charity donation? New computer? Car replacement? Sports gear? etc. etc.....
But what the hell, it is a hobby and as long as he's in fact happy with the choice and not really feeling "Oh my God" about it then enjoy and take good pictures

i've always justified my purchases by thinking of my son. capturing the best shots of him that i can. it's worked out so far. my wife and i are happy with the pictures we have. and, my son is always happy to smile for one more.

You know, I didn't buy when my kids were young...(we have a policy of waiting til we can afford something before we buy...that included our house) so now they are not young and I own what I have....and I WISH I had tons of photos of them when they were young. I have some and they are cheap (throw away camera type)....so there's both sides of the fence. On one side, I have no debt...on another, no fantastic memory shots either. Guess there's pluses and minuses to both....

I absolutely agree with capturing great images of my children (or at least as great as I can...). I think however that I would need to be realistic about the difference an F 2.8 vs F4 lens would make in that capture and whether that difference is worth 1500 USD.
