Hi Folks
Mrs Tugstar has just bought her self a 10D !
Not a problem ? Well I went out an bought her a f2.8 100mm macro lens for her Christmas. I chose the f2.8 100mm as she was using an EOS30 as it sounded like a good compromise. Will the X 1.6 factor make the macro less usable or practical ?
Yes I dont know one end of a tripod from the other, I just pay the bills !

If anything, the 1.6 crop factor means that you don't have to get quite as close for the same field of view, so in that respect it should be just fine. It's a great lens.
Glad to have the Tugstar family onboard.

Thanks belmondo !
Any experiance with a 300mm f2.8 on the 10D ?
She is using a 100-400 f4.5-f5.6 on the EOS 30 for motorsport but we were thinking of upgrading to the 300. At the moment the 100-400 is at about its limit at some tracks if access is limited. With the 10D the 300 would be the equivilent of 480mm so able to reach a little further ?
The f2.8 400 is so much more expensive so probably out of our price range, also there is an almost new f2.8 300 for sale here at around $3000 US.

I have the 100mm 2.8 USM Macro lends and it is great on the 10D. It is a good macro lens, very usable and also good for candid protraits too. I like the fact it has a bit more reach on the 10D, I also use it on an EOS 30 for my slides.

I use a 300/2.8L on the 10D for sport photography - mostly motorsport - and can sy that it works just fine. Most of the other Pros I work with consider the 300/2.8L to be the 'standard' lens for the work. Teamed with 1.4x and 2x L Extenders and a monopod there is little else you need. The 100-400 zoom is limited by the aperture - the 2.8 on the 300mm really makes it usable with 100 or 200 ISO and you can see what you are aiming at.....

Don't spend too much time thinking about the 1.6 factor, it is only an "Effective" magnification.
If the 400 almost not enough, then the 300 on the 300d will still be on the edge.
Good Luck.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question but if she's limited by the reach of the 100-400, then she would be more so with the 300. Yes, the 300 with the 1.6 mag would make it equiv to a 480mm lens but the 100-400 at the 400 end would be equiv to a whopping 680mm!

Remember I said I didnt know one end of a tripod from another well her is the proof !
The 100-400 on the 10D would be equal to 680mm but at 5.6. If I have done my home work correctly shooting high speed action like motorcycle racing will need fairly fast shutter speed. At 5.6 she might have problems with quality and grain espesially if the light is poor ?
