Well, after a heavy night of drinking in Hereford until 3am, me and a friend were up and 7:45am and on our way to the Woodpecker Stages Rally in the Radnor Forest just West of Ludlow, UK.
Virtually all shot with the 70-300 DO IS USM, struggling to cope with my "lager shakes" :o

1. First shot of the day, showing just how dismal the weather was! It rained for probably 5 of the 8 hours we were there!! I really wished I'd bought the KATA rain cover then! (I have now  )

Hello matey! I like the RPM Nova and the 911 - very nice!!

I was at Haye Park all day got soaked through and left the camera on iso 1600  so all in all not the best day - roll on Wales in December.

Dave,

Yeah quite a few more from the same position! The Pug 309 is from exactly the same place, as are a lot more in the gallery.

HI everyone!

First I want to say nice shots, looks like difficult lighting and elements to deal with. I am the proud new owner of a 30D and have spent all five days of ownership just shooting everything in sight. My favorite stuff is rally (haven't shot that yet with my new camera), which looks to be the same for you. I have some basic questions. First, are you prefocusing and then leading the car into the area you focused on, or is the camera's auto focus quick enough to capture, focus and take the shot (I haven't tested this yet on fast moving cars around here)? If you are using the auto focus, which mode are you using, one point, or all? Any good Ideas on how to protect the lenses from the elements, my main concern is dust (I'm usually in the hotter dustier climates)?

I'm accross the pond, state side in hot and sunny California.

Thanks in advance...

Hi lugnutz
1. My cameras autofocus is quick enough to keep up with the car, so yours definetly should be!
2. Use AI SERVO focus mode - it constantly adjusts to keep the image sharp.

3. I almost always use the cantre point only. It's the most sensitive, and usually the cars are pretty much in the centre of the frame!! Although compositionally, you could try one side rather than the other to get a vehicle 'driving into' the shot, if you see what I mean!!

4. Although many disagree, I think a high quality UV filter is probably the best way to protect the lens from dust. Plus clean the camera after every session if possible! And always use the lens hood!

I hope some of this helps? Have fun

Thanks Joenitro!

This will help me practice to get it down before the next rally. I already have the UV filter and the lens hood, so I'm set as far as that goes.

I've seen a couple of pro photogs about a year ago that had a plastic bag taped around his lens, but I'm looking for other ideas. It gets very dusty out here. Don't know if anyone saw the X-Games rally last August, but those are the conditions out this way.

Thanks much for your help!
