View Full Version : What to do with 1D portraits?

I am trying to determine a logical workflow for 16-bit linear images -- primarily portraits -- produced with a Canon 1D. In essence, my main concern is producing prints with the most attractive skintones.

After reading the dozens of postings on this site, I noticed that nearly all the suggestions deal with D30 images. And not many postings refer to enhancing skintones.

Since third-party software does not yet accept 1D RAW images, I have to use "Canon Digital Camera 4.0.1" to convert to 16-bit linear. I assume that 16-bit linear from a 1D (extracted with Canon software) is essentially the same as 16-bit linear from a D30 (extracted with BreezeBrowser), but I'm not sure.

So, I would appreciate any suggestions regarding the most appropriate workflow and which actions and settings to use for processing images -- primarily portraits -- shot on a 1D and converted to 16bit linear.

Many thanks.

I am an Instructor at 2 training facilities. I teach digital photography. For openers take a look at your images enlarged in Photoshop & notice that "skin tones " are really a composite of various colors on the face. Depending upon your printer and paper you may want get a color driver from Inkjet mall for an epson printer. The driver that comes with most epson photo printers boosts the red and yellow. Epson drivers all bump colors. Canon printers offer better white balance but the magenta is color bland. Note that paper will also change the skin tones - depending upon the brand. You need to make test prints on various brands, calibrate your monitor, and review all prints. In other words you have to test and work at it before you can get portraits down pat.
