Hmm, a still crippled Phase One "lite" program for $249 US or a full Adobe CS with all the trimmings for $299 US.
Gee it was a tough decision ...

This was just an FYI post. I make no money off of C1. Some think C1 is better for RAW processing. What is "crippled" about the offering from Phase One? Package looks good to me. Hmmmm.......... whatever.

If I look at the feature comparison chart and look at the differences between the new Special Edition and the Light Edition, I see these differences:
- SE has IPTC support
- The batch size limit in SE is 100 vs. 20 in LE
- SE has support Canon 1Ds, 1D, Nikon D1X
- With SE you get Phase One E-mail Support
- For the SE version, a CD-ROM is for sale at dealers
No spectacular new features that justify the price of the SE version, which is twice the price of the LE version, for me.

Compared to the C1 Pro version the C1 SE doesn't have:
IPTC support, batch renaming, tethered operation for Canon, output interpolation, Photoshop anti-moire plugin, CMYK output, and dealer support (whatever that means). These comparisons are all from the Phase One site.
Are these features important? I don't know. But that's what differentiates the Pro from the SE and one assumes that there's some additional value to the Phase One Pro version. In any case that's MY definition of crippled.
ANYONE in North America who has a legal copy of Photoshop Elements can purchase Photoshop CS for $299 US. Any (all?) of us who have purchased a 10D or dRebel have a copy of PS Elements since it came with the camera, and on this copy of PS CS nothing is crippled.
There is an argument that the Phase One RAW converter is better, but that's an argument. But how is Phase One at everything else Photoshop does? For $50 US extra it's a no brainer to choose PS CS.
This was for informational purposes too and I have no financial association with Adobe. Hmmm?

Can someone confirm this... last time I checked the OEM copy of PS Elements that came with the camera wasn't eligable for the PS CS upgrade.
Thanks,
Chris

Well Canada works too.

Yes, the deal was originally for folks that bought Microtek scanners and got PS Elements bundled with it. The web site given only asks for your PS Elements serial number, so folks have been able to order upgrade packages for an advantageous price, whether they bought a scanner or not. All they needed was a valid PS Elements serial number.
I found out about this some number of months ago, when PS 7.0 was extant, from the site run by the guy that does the Coolpix digital secrets ebook on CD. After getting my Digital Rebel, I tried ordering from the Adobe/Microtek offer, and I now have a full, boxed, retail PS 7.0 for Windows, that I got for $299.
I haven't checked the Adobe Microtek offer recently, but apparently they've now changed it to getting the CS version for the same price.
For those that have PS 7.0 (as I do), you can upgrade to CS for (I think) $179 (or maybe cheaper, I don't recall). Total outlay for me for CS (including the $299 7.0 deal) will still be cheaper than the full retail boxed set price.

One reason for my excitement is that SE will be available for Mac OSX which is what I use. I wish the C1 Rebel version was available for Mac but it is not. LE is also not available for the Mac. The only option for Mac is the Pro version for $499. An intro price for SE of $199 will be available. I will try it for 30 days and compare to CS. I tried the Pro version but my attempts were half hearted. I knew I was not buying the Pro version. From what I have read C1 used in tandem with CS is a powerhouse combo.
FYI.......According to Adobe's site, Elements is not an eligible product for the full upgrade to CS.

I've been throwing the phrase "upgrade" around and you are perfectly correct that just having PS Elements doesn't qualify you for Photoshop CS. It DOES qualify you to buy PS CS for $299 (all US $) instead of $649.
That (I think) is because $299US for Photoshop CS isn't technically an "upgrade". First the true upgrade price - from PS 7 to CS - on the Adobe site is $169.00, not $299. Second, you don't get an "ugrade" version either, but the full Photoshop CS package.
But $299 is sure a lot cheaper than $649US no matter how it's described.

David,
I have tried to find the $299 version of PS CS on Adobe's site. Where did you find this information? I have PS CS but I think that some with a Digital Rebel may like to have the full version of PS CS. Can you provide a link? If what you say is true why wouldn't everyone just buy a copy of PS Elements and then upgrade to PS CS for $299. You could do this for about $349. Adobe would never sell a full version of Photo Shop again.
That (I think) is because $299US for Photoshop CS isn't technically an "upgrade". First the true upgrade price - from PS 7 to CS - on the Adobe site is $169.00, not $299. Second, you don't get an "ugrade" version either, but the full Photoshop CS package.
David,
I think you are confused as to what a PS "upgrade" version is. The upgrade version is exactly the same as the "full" version. You get the same package. The difference is, to activate the "upgrade" you must have a verified version on your hard drive or a valid serial number for an earlier version of PS to enable the new software to function. Hence the lower price.
But $299 is sure a lot cheaper than $649US no matter how it's described.

I just took advantage of this offer to upgrade the Elements that came with my new DRebel to Photoshop CS. On install, the only serial number I was asked for was the PS CS one. There was no pre-existing verison of PS or Elements on my disk. As best I can tell, the version of PS CS I received was the full retail one.

It's funny how a thread can start out on one thing and just get lost. 8) . And what started out as a yahoo for C1 SE became a discussion of Adobe's various version attributes.
I have PS cs and demoed C1 Pro for mac . I loved it and feel it is a great tool. I am a hobbiest and am greatful for C1 SE as I couldn't justify the price of Pro and can work with SE . I waited a long time for a version to work with my D60 on my Mac G4 under OSX. It's here and I bought it and am happy with it so far. It does a good job of tweaking and finalizing a raw image which I can then touch up in PS if I want or feel further adjusting is neccesary or not.
I have found that different RAW converters give varying subtle results on different images and not being expert enough to just tweak the image to perfection with any one program ( as I am sure each is capable of ) I like comparing the different results in the various programs when I have an image I like. Different size hammers,Ya know:D
I started on coral photopaint and graduated to Photoshop 5. I love graphics software and will always use it. But since getting my D60 I have needed to grow into other programs . What C1 does for my raw images is amazing to me.
These are my opinions only.
