Is anyone having erratic exposure problems with the EOS10D and the 550EX flash?

I am consistently getting perfect results with 35mm Canon gear (EOS 5 and 540EZ), but I'm frequently getting underexposure under identical conditions with the digital gear. Also, the light is uneven and generally fails to light the background successfully.

The camera exposes perfectly in natural light, and when I use the FE lock facility I get much better results.

I have tried another 550EX and whilst it's slightly better (it's had a lot more use than mine) in E-TTL mode, it's nowhere near as good as the conventional film gear.

Can anyone offer suggestions?

There are differences how flash values are measured between film and digital. You have to readjust the way you focus and use the modes. In a way, E-TTL is much more complex and requires more attention from the photographer than it used to be. Read the following article, then read it again to get some idea what you've got to deal with:

I have also had exposure problems with flash.

I now shoot on manual and adjust shutter/f-stop until I get the right image.

Use a D60 not a 10D but.. No problem with the 550 with film (EOS 1N) on the D60 set to +2 and all is fine.
