The Harper and his Dog,
On the green banks of the Shannon when Sheelagh was nigh,
No blithe Irish lad was so happy as I:
No harp like my own could so cheerily play,
And wherever I went was my poor dog Tray.
When at last I was forced from my Sheelagh to part,
She said, while the sorrow was big at her heart,
'Oh remember your Sheelagh, when far, far away,
And be kind , my dear Pat, to your poor dog Tray.'
Poor dog, he was faithful and kind to be sure,
And he constantly loved me, although I was poor,
When the sour-looking folks sent me heartless away,
I had always a friend in my poor dog Tray.
When the road was so dark, and the night was so cold,
And Pat and his dog were grown weary and old,
How snugly we slept in my old coat of gray,
And he licked me for kindness, my poor dog Tray.
Though my wallet was scant, I remembered his case,
Nor refused my last crust to his pitiful face;
But he died at my feet on a cold winter's day,
And I played a lament for my poor dog Tray.
Where shall I go? Poor forsaken and blind,
Can I find one to guide me so faithful and kind ?
To my sweet native village, so far, far way,
I can never return with my poor dog Tray.

Well I'm impressed to say the least. I don't know how you do it. But that was the best fit of poem and photo to date. Did you hire him to pose for you? :D :D. What is sad is that the homeless situation is everywhere. :(
nicely done. now to put on my thinking cap. Don't do that to often, makes my brain hurt :D :D

The House with Nobody in It
Whenever I walk to Suffern along the Erie track
I go by a poor old farmhouse with its shingles broken and black.
I suppose I've passed it a hundred times, but I always stop for a minute
And look at the house, the tragic house, the house with nobody in it.
I never have seen a haunted house, but I hear there are such things;
That they hold the talk of spirits, their mirth and sorrowings.
I know this house isn't haunted, and I wish it were, I do;
For it wouldn't be so lonely if it had a ghost or two.............

The Watchmaker' Shop ~
A street in our town has a queer little shop
With tumble - down walls and a thatch on the top;
and all the wee windows with crookedy panes
are shining and winking with watches and chains.
all sorts and all sizes, in silver and gold,
and brass ones and tin ones, and new ones and old;
and clocks for the kitchen, and clocks for the hall,
high ones and low ones, and wag -at -the -wall
The watchmaker sits on a long-legged seat
and bids you the time of the day when you meet;
and round and about him there's tickety-tock
from the tiniest watch to the grandfather clock.
I wonder he doesn't get tired of the chime
and all the clocks ticking and telling the time;
But there he goes winding lest any should stop,
This queer little man in the watchmaker's shop.

Beautiful photo and verse NG, I really like the reflections of the trees and the way the pebbles frame them
Marie very nice, say the queer little shop didn't happen to be owned by Salvador Dali now. :D :D :D

~ Night in Winter ~
Shut in from all the world without,
We sat the clean-winged hearth about,
Content to let the north wind roar,
In baffled rage at pane and door,
While the red logs before us beat
The frost-line back with tropic heat;
And ever , when a louder blast,
Shook beam and rafter as it passed,
The merrier up its roaring draught
The great throat of the chimney laughed;
The house-dog on his paws outspread
Laid to the fire his drowsy head,
The cat's dark silhouette on the wall
A couchant tiger's seemed to fall;
What matter how the night behaved!
What matter how the north-wind raved!
Blow high, blow low, not all its snow
Could quench our hearth-fire's ruddy glow

Kind of tough to follow that. but spirit is spirit :D
My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends- It gives a lovely light!

Thanks Marie; You are right this is great for, making one think creatively or should I say outside the box.
I took a cardboard box spray painted the inside black trimed the end off of a candle to expose the wick and used 2 clamps from my work shop to hold. Placed my favorite (like I've got an unfavorite) bottle of scotch in front, lit the candle and hoped I didn't burn the place down, or break my bottle. :D :D :D Now to don the thinking cap for something else.
P.S Was that the ghost of Christmas yet to come from a Christmas Carol?? :D :D

Sandy,
all that trouble you went to was well worth it :)
thank you very much
is that bottle empty now and thrown out ?
it will be remembered forever :D
I wondered how you got the candles placed just like that.
and using the two clamps for the candles,
instead of on the bottle itself was very clever :D
it was a great idea
I thought maybe it was a trick photo.
hope the ideas don't run out.
(like the whiskey has ) :D :D

From the treasured writings of Kahlil Gibran
lebanese poet and philosopher

Poverty
My fellow poor, Poverty sets off the nobility of the spirit, while wealth discloses its
evil.
Sorrow softens the feelings and Joy heals the wounded heart.
Were Sorrow and Poverty abolished, the spirit of man would be like an empty tablet,
with naught inscribed save the signs of selfishness and greed
My poor friend. if you only knew that the Poverty which causes you so much wretchedness
is the very thing that reveals the knowledge of Justice and the understanding of life, you would be contented with your lot.
I say knowledge of Justice; for the rich man is too busy amassing wealth to seek this knowledge.
And I say understanding of Life; for the strong man is too eager in his pursuit of power and glory to keep to the straight path of truth.
ReJoice then , my poor friend, for you are the mouth of Justice and the Book of Life.
Be content, for you are the source of virtue in those who rule over you and the pillar of integrity of those who guide you

Wonderful prose to go with beautiful photos: No the bottle is far from empty, I'm being very frugile with it. It's seems your neighbors the Scots underestimated the demand for it and have now run out of the 16 year old stuff, nary a bottle can be found in the States, this is worse than the gas shortage of the 70's. Anybody's guess when the next 16year old will be ready. :D haven't had to much time to be creative, what with the holidays and being in morning over the Scotch. :D :D :D

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

I think that I have the complete works of Frost -- but I forgot this one. Very nice.
On the other had I saw the fences in the background... so frost is lurking in the air somewhere (Jack of course).
More poems please. I love 'em all.

~ The Irish Rover ~
On the fourth of July, eighteen hundred and six
We set sail from the sweet cove of Cork.
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks,
For the grand city hall of New York.
' Twas an elegant craft she was rigged fore and aft
and how the wild wind drove her,
She could stand a great blast in her twenty seven masts,
and we called her the Irish Rover
We had one million bags of the best Sligo rags,
We had two million barrels of stones,
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides,
We had four million barrels of bone.
We had five million hogs, six million dogs,
seven million barrels of porter.....
http://www.pbase.com/image/18250587/original.jpg
We had eight million bales of old nanny goats tails
in the hold of the Irish Rover.
There was Barney Mcgee from the banks of the Lee.
There was Hogan from County Tyrone.
There was Johnny McGuirk, who was scared stiff of work,
and a chap from Westmeath called Malone.
There was Slugger O'Toole who was drunk as a rule .
and fighting Bill Tracy from Dover.
There was Dolan from Clare, just as strong as a bear.
all aboard on the Irish Rover
We had sailed seven years when the measles broke out,
and our ship lost its way in the fog.
then the whole of the crew was reduced down to two,
just myself and the captain's old dog.
The ship struck a rock, Lord what a shock,
the boat, it was flipped right over.
turned nine times around and the old dog was drowned.
I'm the last of the Irish Rover.

OK Marie & Howie Did I do justice to Robert Service :)
.....“Sunshine", I called her, and she brought, I vow,
God's blessed sunshine to this life of mine.
I was a rover, of the breed who plough
Life's furrow in a far-flung, lonely line;
The wilderness my home, my fortune cast
In a wild land of dearth, barbaric, vast.
When did I see her first? Long had I lain
Groping my way to life through fevered gloom.
Sudden the cloud of darkness left my brain;
A velvet bar of sunshine pierced the room,
And in that mellow glory aureoled
She stood, she stood, all golden in its gold.
Sunshine! O miracle! the earth grew glad;
Radiant each blade of grass, each living thing.
What a huge strength, high hope, proud will I had!
All the wide world with rapture seemed to ring.
Would she but wed me? YES: then fared we forth
Into the vast, unvintageable North.
