It's Black with a red stripe.
It is a great lens.
Quick focusing
Well controlled distortion
Did I mention the red stripe?
Comes with a nice pouch
Needs the fairly pricey 77mm filter (don't even bother with a cheapo 77mm filter)
Stays on my camera as my stardard lens.
The red stripe looks so good round the end.

Just a few comments :D

Personally I think it is Canons best price Vs. Quality zoom lens in the line up.

If you look at there primes there are better deals,.. even in the "L" line... but for a nice wide zoom it can't be beat! :)

I have recently added this camera to my limited collection of lenses. For the past few weeks I have been shooting with it on an almost daily basis. So far, I really enjoy using this lens!

Here is a link to some of my shots that I have done using it. http://www.pbase.com/darter02/picture_a_day_for_a_year The first one is in the November gallery beginning on the 24th.

I made my decision to purchase this lens after reading a number of forum threads and also this comparison of it to the 16-35mm.

This lense stays on my camera at all times. It's only my failings that make a bad shot, not the 17-40, which is THE VERY BEST LENS I HAVE EVER OWNED. Even when I go out with the express intention of taking pictures with my shiny new 100-400 IS lens, I still find a picture for the 17-40.

It's got a cool red band round the front end as well.

Buy it now and welcome to the world of 'L' addicts

I've never read anything but favourable reviews for the Canon 17-40 f/4 L. It's the first lens on my wish list.

It was my 3rd lens purchase for my 10D but it is the lens I find I use the most and almost always on the camera. Great lens! I'm finding I look for more situations to use the 17-40L than my other lenses, which is a surprise to me, as I usually like a lot of zoom. (is it to late to ask Santa for the 100-400 L IS? I'll try to be good!)

And that Red Stripe on the end ... I mean, WOW!
Only thing better than that red stripe would be one of those white "L" lenses ... well someday soon, I think (hope?)!

What sort of filter should I get with this lense and other lenses?

Always keep a UV filter on it for protection and I also keep a CPL to help balance daylight shots.

For this lense on a 10D or 300D ...

What size filter do I need?

I remember reading somewhere to only ever look at B & W or Canon filters ... care to comment?

This lens has a filter thread size of 77mm. Since you already spent so much on this fine piece of glass, might as well top it up with the best UV filter. I would recommend B+W UV Haze MRC 010.
