Are the raw files for the XTi different format from the XT ones?

Every camera has a different RAW format, since a RAW format is matched to a specific sensor. The XT and 20D sensors are very similar, but not identical, so they have different RAW formats. I assume the XTi is the 400D - if so then it's probably quite different.

Most likely. Think Rebel->Rebel XT, 20d->30D etc.

I thought since it was the same processor, only more resolution, the format would be close enough to the same to not require new convert software. Well actually to me, it looks like each company would have by now figured out how to add a header to the raw file that described the data inside, so new tools wouldn't be needed for every new camera.

You just described DNG swampy :) Image data with metadata that describes it. Maybe one day manufacturers will use it, but it's probably more work to implement. The processor isn't important, you can forget it even exists.

Well DNG takes a lot of raw formats and converts it to a single format, you can't expect canon/sony/nikon/etc to spend the money/time to make their sensors to capture data the same way, but one would think each company would have developed their on format and stuck with it.

Not quite - DNG retains the original RAW image data, and adds metadata that describes the format.

The 400D/XTi has a different RAW file system than the 350D/XT. No current third-party RAW program will handle it. At least that I've seen.
It kinda sucks for me since with the 350D/XT I got used to using Picasa to import my RAW files and PS Elements to do any significant RAW PP. Neither one works with the 400D/XTi and I'm forced to use Canon's DPP for any RAW related tasks.
At least PS should probably have an update out soon. I imagine it will be a while longer until Picasa updates.

I imagine Google will have a Picasa update before Adobe updates Camera Raw. Google's been really good about that.

The 400/XTi has to be different, since they have the dust data map thing in there now.

[Wanders off to grab the Picasa beta].

That's just strange. Thumbnails of the RAW files display fine. But if you open them in the edit window they all have a pink haze. Well, its getting there I guess.

The thumbnail displays fine because that's the thumbnail jpeg "file" that's embedded in the raw file. Nothing special needs to be done to it other than displaying it with any JPEG compatiple code.

Makes sense. Although the prior (non-beta) version didn't even display the thumbnails. All the pictures were just black boxes - albeit ones of the proper shape (ie, portrait or landscape view)

Hmmmm...the thumbnails for XTi raw caps in my Picasa are magenta tinted.
Strangely when I first opened them in Picasa they looked fine then slowly one by one Picasa tinted them all...how odd.

Yup. Picasa goes through and processes the thumbnail images. When you first import the XTi RAW files, Picasa will just display the embedded JPEG thumbnail. But after it has done it's processing, it will then display the messed up versions it has processed.
