View Full Version : Rebel is PC World's 'Best Buy'

I just picked up the January PC world, and they rated several Digital SLR's including the Rebel, 10D, 1Ds, N***n D100, Olympus E1, and Pentax ist D. Their conclusion was the Rebel was the best buy, but they also liked the Olympus E1. You won't learn anything by reading it, but it will be a shot in the arm for Rebel owners (as if they needed it.)

The 'depth' of their reviews is laughable, although I don't necessarily question their findings. I don't think there are very many people in this forum that can disagree that the Drebel is a 'best buy.'
It's also interesting on a personal basis to recall that their recommendations in the past were sufficient to get me to buy the N***n 995, and then the G2.
Whereas this is a computer magazine, their endorsement certainly carries some weight. Knowing no more than I did then, it was sufficient. Now, I'd proabably dig a little deeper, although I can't argue with anything they've led me to thus far.

I'm really not in the market for one now. I might have been before I bought the second 10D, but they were sold out at the local Best Buy, and I wasn't willing to take a chance on their online system. The 10D was sitting on the shelf at the local camera store, so I grabbed it.
The last time I was in Best Buy (last week), they were still out of Drebels, and didn't expect any more in the store until January 6.

Based on price/performance, the DReb is by far the best buy in the group. I had the opportunity to handle (fondle??) a DReb in the local Best Buy store the other day. The camera was pretty slick, plastic housing or not (and don't forget the stainless steel frame underneath that housing). It felt good in the hand and had a somewhat logical control layout. The only weak point I found with the camera was the incredibly cheap feel of the lens. It took forever to find the focus ring and when I manually manipulated it, it felt like junk.
In short, I liked the camera, but I didn't like the lens.
