Anyone got any good reasons for not using the telephoto made for the A70 rather than the A80 apart fom some vigionetting (?) at closer zooms as you get a x2.4 lens not a x1.75?
They both fit the adapter fine.

They may both fit the adapter, but do they both work as well?
The a70 and a80 teleconverters are matched optically to their respective cameras. If they were 'swappable' then they would both be designated for a70 and a80.
You should not get any vignetting on the A70 lens when used as designed. It's only designed to augment the A70 lens at telephoto setting. Same as the wide angle is only for wide angle.
If you want to mix and match, I would suggest you do some testing of image quality. Take the same photo twice. Once with the A70 and again with the A80 adapters. Ensure everything is correct, focus, exposure, no camera shake ... Then on you PC, examine the photos. Is one showing more or less aborrations then the other. Is the corner to corner sharpness better in one. Is one produse a lower contrast image? I would be suprised if the A80 adapter outperforms the A70 adapter on the A70, but there is a small chance it may.

Vignetting still occured even I used the 'designed-for' accessories.. I use TC-DC52 and LA-DC52C for my A70 and still vignet, you can only get around 30% of zoom without vignet. I prefer Olympus TCON17, its excellent teleconventor.
I think, TC-DC52 is good teleconvertor. if you need the x2.4 lens, I believe there'll be no problem when using it on your A80

I have just bought an A80 to replace my A70 as an insurance claim. I had tried the adapter only on the A80 and thought everything would be ok. Is the new adapter longer than the LA-DC52C?

The adapter is longer and the x2.4 seems to work well.
