Second Curtain Flash Question

I have a Canon EOS 10D, and I can use the second curtain flash feature fine with the internal flash.

When I use the external Canon Speedlite 550EX the second curtain flash does not work.

The flash fires at the start of the long exposure but not at the end of the exposure like it should.

Any ideas if this is correct or do I have a faulty camera?

Second Curtain flash is custom function 15 on the EOS 10D.

You might have to set second curtain sync on the flashgun as well as on the camera, IIRC you do on the Metz.

Page 49 of the 550EX manual.

It says to press down the + and - buttons at the same time. A symbol that looks like three overlapping triangles (with one filled) will appear on the 550EX display. You are now in 2nd curtain Sync mode.

Why this isn't automatic when you set it on the camera I don't know. I don't even know if this works as I haven't tried it.

Could this possibly be for when you use the flash off camera, remotely??
