I discovered something I'm sure you all knew - Custom Function 4-3.
This combination of settings allows control when the autofocus is on or off independently from the shutter release button, and it also allows the exposure to be updated automatically from frame to frame in changing light conditions.
Its pretty cool. You hit the AE lock button to get auto-focus, and use the shutter release separately. Used in combo with AI servo, this is great for shooting birds and moving stuff like that.
I wouldn't have come up with that independently like from reading the manual, well, because I wouldn't do anything intelligent like that .... this Chuck guy from Canon knows all the tricks.
