Polarisers typically cut down your light by about 1.5 stops. You don't want that if you're shooting at night.

Yeah it definitely has an affect at night... Haha I found that out the hard way... It was when I first got my 350D in December last year... Was doing some night shooting of Christmas lights and stuff and they were very dark and then I realized my polarizer was still on... Doh!!

At night a CPL filter has little to no value. It's purpose is to polarize the light rays entering your lens and by doing so reduce haze due to light scatter as well as reflections off non-metallic objects. Also, as others have mentioned, a polarizer will cut your light by 1.5 - 2 stops.

Also, unless you're shooting the portrait during the day, in sunshine from a great distance, a polarizer isn't going to help you either. It probably won't hurt, but it's not going to help.
