I bought my canon 10d this summer. I also purchased the 28-135 lens. After having it about 2 weeks it starting making grinding and whirring noises. I contacted canon and had me send it back to get repaired. It took about 2.5 weeks total. I had to pay shipping and insurance one direction. Well after having it back for a week it will frequently not work at all using the auto focus mode. I have another lens and it works fine. (all the time) but not my 28-135. Anyone experience this problem?

Which problem? The problem with the lens or the problem with Canon Factory Service (CFS)?
I have that lens but have not had any problems with it at all. On the other hand I have had two warranty repairs performed by CFS and on one occasion it took two trips and on another it took three trips for a successful repair.
Call CFS and let them know what happened, they should be willing to pay both ways overnight shipping and prioritize your repair to the top when it arrives.
And then keep your fingers crossed that they complete it the second time.

Thanks Jim for your response. Is CFS such a shoddy outfit that it takes 2 or three times to repair a faulty lens? Or lenses just that complicated?

Mike: Not sure what the answer to that is. They get it fixed eventually. I've quizzed Canon on that, as I'm sure you will on Monday, and all ya get is a bunch of "I'm sorry's", but at least the returns don't cost you anything.
I got to know Steve at Irvine quite well when my 100-400 was being (repeatedly) repaired.

I dropped a 50/1.4 on concrete and sent it in to be fixed. It came back and worked for about six months and stopped auto-focusing. I sent it in to be fixed.
