Is it possible to set the shutter curtain speed faster than 1/250th with 550EX flash attached? I realize it will not synch properly, but I cannot get it to work. I can do this on the 1D series cameras.

Yes - you need to set flash & camera for high speed sync, just like with the 1-series.

You could use an adapter to plug it into the PC socket and it will fire at any shutter speed you select. But if you realize it will not sync properly, why bother?

The original 1D has a flash sync of 1/500s....

You need to rise the shutter speed above 1/250s in order to get the HSS functioning.

You need to rise the shutter speed above 1/250s in order to get the HSS functioning.
The more accurate statement would be "You need to raise the shutter speed above the camera's max sync speed in order to get the HSS functioning." Remember, there are still cameras with max sync speeds of 1/200 and 1/500. :)
