Hey everyone,
I love these forums here, but I also like to check out other forums, especially because I'm new to photography and am always looking for good deals on lenses and other gear. I know fredmiranda.com has a marketplace like here, but I can't join the site because I don't have any "non-internet based e-mail addresses." I have my college e-mail address, but it says that won't work either.
Does anyone here know anyone I can get in touch with so I can register over there too?
I don't know if there's any competition between these two sites, I just want to be able to learn from all available sites.

You should have an email adress from your ISP. If not, I would contact them and get it.

Unfortunately the Miranda site is horrendously slow! Nice content, but POTN is still far better.

I'll try that, thanks.

Yeah I'm on FM. Signup up was quiet annoying because I had to register an email with my domain etc. I don't see why they wouldn't allow Gmail. Its also VERY VERY slow, slowest forum I've used in a long time. It also seems a bit outdated (forum software/design etc), although alot of the content is helpful.

Doesn't Fred Miranda have a feedback form? :)

FM is a tragedy of good content ruined by poor software/speed. But their reviews from users are still top dog. You can buy a proper domain name easily; every one should have one, not least to ease transition from ISP to ISP over the years. Hosting it is very small money.

There are allot of places that don't let you sign up with a free email service account. Not sure what the value is but I have run into it a few times.

Cuts down on spam. If you screw around with the forum, they can contact your isp and complain. You lose your internet connection.

I have been a member of Fred Miranda's for years.
All you need to do is register initially with a valid ISP account, so even if a friend has one that can confirm you're registration and then afterwards just go into you're profile and change it whatever you want, it's strictly on registration.
I use a GMAIL account for mine now without issue and have for a long time.

FredMiranda seems to be heading downhill. It got slow then speeded up after they tweaked it. Then it started to get slow again. Then they started banning members willy-nilly. Several interesting and worthwhile contributors got banned. I hadn't logged in for a week or so and when I tried, I found my account had been banned. Heaven knows why - no emails from admin there or any other form of contact nor any warnings. Straight out of the blue. I never bothered contacting then to find out why because I figure if they're like that then they're like that and there's no point in bothering with them.

FYI
Fred has suspended new memberships for a while. He's had issues with his server and a huge influx of "newbies," so he isn't taking new memberships at this time. I read this on "Forum and Miscellaneous" the other day.

FM is at a bit of a crossroads - Fred doesn't want to spend his own money on a hardware upgrade, and he doesn't want to charge for use of the forum. But FM does need an upgrade if they want to continue to operate with any kind of speed.
There were some extensive discussions there about fees or other means of raising money. Those took place right around the time that Rob Galbraith sold his forums to a for-profit entity. I don't think any reasonable solution was reached. BTW, donations are welcome there, as they are here.

Has he ever heard about 'voluntary contribution'? If you run a quality site which members find value in participating, many will offer money voluntarily. (Which reminds me, it seems there used to be a way to volunarily contribute to server equiment maintenance on POTN, wasn't there once? I contributed to a forum, but I forget which one! A few weeks ago I looked for a way to do so again on POTN -- my annual underwriting, but couldn't find anything!)

I mentioned donations, but not very clearly. Yes, you can voluntarily donate to his forum, and you can buy some of the photoshop actions and plugins that he sells. It's a bit difficult to find the location of the donation page, though.

FM is my favorite "other" forum.. :)
In keeping with our good working relationship with Fred and the Gang over there, I think that discussions of donations etc.. should be kept on Fred's own forum.
I'd hate for the crew over there to think we are in any way telling them how to run things.
So I'm going to close this and ask that these discussions take place on Fred's own turf.
To the OP,
Contact for FM are avaialable @ FM.
