what about the following proposal for the list page:
Thumbnail listing with a popup window for the presented image clicking on the thumbnail.
I don't know if this can be done easily in EE, yesterday I was browsing the news section of Getty Images at http://editorial.gettyimages.com - have a look, at this website it's very easy and informative to search for pictures.
If somebody wants to download full resolution images for the print in magazines you have to register.
