View Full Version : Best 10D Parameter settings?

I am currently in the process of purchasing a new system. So far the 10D is my choice. I have already downloaded the manual and gone through it cover to cover so that I can be more familiar with the settings and options. In my research I have read that there are a few prefered parameter settings such as SHARPENING turned off. What are your prefered settings? What C.Fn do you prefer or use most? Any other good TIPS for settings that may come in handy?
I have many hours in the Digital Dark Room so that is not a problem , however, I would rather spend the time doing the camera work. It is important to me to have the images as close to perfect, in camera, as possible.
Thanks in advance.

I think many people would reccommend leaving Sharpening at "0" which is not turned off and others choose +1. The lowest you can select in parameters is " -2". Even at this level and even in Raw format, there is still some sharpening done by the camera. For myself, I leave everything at "0" and shoot Raw, Adobe RGB. You can adjust everything to taste in conversion and post processing.
Good luck with the camera.

I bump up the color saturation, and thats it. All the rest you can adjust easily (or better) before printing.
One thing I missed in the manual when I got my D30. You can make the parameters and downlaod them to the camera, but you have to TURN IT ON. Make sure you access the menu and select the one you want.

Umm, I've always believed that the Raw format is just that, raw data stored directly from the sensor, and thus sharpening, colour spaces and the like are not applied.
They do, however, apply to the JPEG stored within the Raw file.

That's what everbody believed till Canon's representative Chuck Westphall revealed that even Raw files have some proprietary sharpening done to them in the camera! Feel free not to believe me, but do check out the words from the horse's mouth. You can find the thread on the 10D forum at http://www.robgalbraith.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB8&Number=184726&Forum=,,,f8,,,&Words=sharpening&Searchpage=2&Limit=25&Main=181319&Search=true&where=bodysub&Name=&daterange=0&newerval=&newertype=&olderval=&oldertype=&bodyprev=#Post184726.
Happy hunting,

How do you bump up the saturation and what is the result?
More vibrant colours?

I did shearch the web and some guy recommend settings
contrast -1
sharpness your choice
saturation 0
color tone -1
It work fine for me
but you don't have ultimate settings just experiment.
Enjoy in your new 10d

Ahh, you are correct. I had misunderstood a message in that thread by mr Westfall as stating that FVU applies a small amount of sharpening even if no sharpening is selected, which wouldn't affect C1 (for instance), but reading the whole thread, it is clear that my interpretation was wrong.
However, the sharpness setting does not affect this sharpening but is just a tag to select which sharpening setting is used by default in FVU, for example. So in that sense the parameter settings do not matter as you can always override them in post-processing.

That's correct. You just cannot undo the sharpening already done to the Raw file by the proprietary/secret Canon in camera software. This is unrelated to FVU or any conversion software.

I shoot in RAW with an embedded large .jpg. The settings that I have used (which only affect the .jpg) are 1,2,1,0. Hope this is helpful.
