After missing "THE OUTING" of the summer; I had to see How wet I could get...Met up with Gary, and we decided to give the river crossing a go..
After all Marc (Blackburnian) manged quite nicely eh? :D So around 07:30 we hit the trail and slid into the water...
On the approach; we stopped in the river...A little tricky setting up here I tell ya ! But good views...
All shot with the 30D; 500mm f4.0; 1.4X (All Full Frame - No Crops)

Nice captures here, Ted. Very sharp, great color. I'm surprised the owl stays so close to the same area day after day. And that it doesn't perch in a more protected spot. I like image #2 and #3 the best, but they're all well done.
And thanks for the detailed EXIF.

Excellent shots and such great luck to see this owl in decent light. My favorites are the last two, but all are nice, sharp and clean.

Grest find!!!! The last shot is wonderful, a nice unobstructed view of this magnificent owl with a background that directs all of the attention to him. These are a nice series of shots Ted. Very nicely done! :)

Impressive shooting. I like the composition, exposure and the colours. Nice detail and expression on the Great Horned Owl's face. I think these images are definitely worth getting a bit wet for. I'm not exactly sure how you guys managed it but you were able to keep a lot drier than this other determined owl photographer. It was very tempting to follow him over for some better shots but my shoes were still drying from the day before. He used to do a lot of fly fishing so is very comfortable in this kind of environment. Still, he managed to find a better, less wet route on the way back.

Thanks Wilson; These came together nicely (For a change)..I think I may be getting the hang of things..Gary & I did manage to stay much drier then this guy. And we had a much heavier load  BUT after seeing those guys returning from fishing; it appears that we may have an even easier crossing time.

Nice series here Ted and I am a little slow commenting...a few computer issues and then my youngest lad comandeered it for homework  I am glad I decided to join you on your quest and i don't think there was ever any serious doubt after receiving that e-mail and photo from Saul the previous day. Marc's post only reinforced the likelihood I would get wet:D Your images are all great with good composition and detail, great light and I am quite happy we had diffused light with the cloudiness of the morning...no shadows:) A very beautiful Owl and nice to see it has grown to become such a healthy specimen since the Winter. I hope it sticks around but I also wonder if its just the first step for its departure to find its own territory....summer is almost done. I will check for a few images that are different from yours and then decide if i should post or not....thanks for letting me try out the 500 F4 BTW :D

Yeah, I saw those two walking a good route back to shore. It seems the water barely went higher than their calf. But I lost track where they went once they reached land....did they walk up to the Yacht Club?
Good news folks. The Great Horned Owl is still there as of late this afternoon. Infact it flew from the island over to the Yacht Club (the same route, but by air, as those two guys who were heading back yesterday) and landed in a tree on the shore (right near that fence/stairs at the edge of the Yacht Club). Soon as the owl flew over a Great Blue Heron came flying in toward where I was standing and landed in a bare tree to the right (same tree I saw a Merlin plucking a Cedar Waxwing yesterday....oooohhhh, that was neat (not for the Waxwing), feathers flying all over the place).
I ran into Saul while down there late today and he followed me down to "your launching area from yesterday". Originally I thought Saul had to make the trip across the river to shoot the owl just like you guys did. I found out he was fortunate to have caught the owl on the ridge side of the river perched in a tree and shot it from there (this was before Marc's group went to photograph it).

The wet treck seems worthwhile, Ted, you got some wonderful shot of this gorgeous owl. I'd be worried like crazy about slipping/tripping and taking a bath, not to mention dunking my gear. You are all very brave :D

canondslruser Good news folks. The Great Horned Owl is still there as of late this afternoon. Thanks canondslruser..;) Glad to here the owl's still around; Gary was telling me he's heard it may be on it's way soon...We have to take advantage while we can..

You are all very brave Thanks Bea; we manged quite well; only wet up to our knees; Some of the others took a more direct line and got a bit more water logged:D . Slip/Sliding was the nature of the walk; Slow and Steady...

We even had a guy from Montreal drive down and meet up with Marc (I was stuck at Work) on Tuesday just to see the owl and get some shots....Go figure !
BUT WAIT ! He came back TODAY ! because; WOE is him; he only had a shot of the owl with his head 180 degrees backwards (in the woods).
