Hi, got this butterfly and don't know what it is? Its BIG, about 3-4" from top of wing to bottom.
Desperatedly need to know, or even point me to a website that can help!

Beautiful looking moth, lovely colours, very nice shot as you grabbed the texture of the wings quite nicely.

Owl moth? Maybe. But where are you? It really doesn't look like a moth to me, but rather a butterfly. There are a lot of very closely related species in North America and Eurasia.

It is an owl moth...at first I thought it was a blue morpho but the markings are the same as an owl moth.

Butterfly would likely have a clubbed antenna rather than finishing in a point.Nice detail on the shot including the eye.

I'd say it was an owl butterfly - dont moths have furry antenna? You can see one here http://www.londonbutterflyhouse.com/gallery/theowl.html - it is from central/southern america.

Yep, its an owl butterfly as opposed to an owl moth. I have that on good advice. Thanks to everyone.

Moths generally rest with their wings down, so my guess is that it is the butterfly as well. Absolutely beautiful photo.
